2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – New York Rangers lose 1-4 against the Philadelphia Flyers

173rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the Philadelphia Flyers play host to the New York Rangers. The game took place at the Wells Fargo Centre this Thursday in front of 20,000 fans. This was the 12th game of the campaign
for the New York Rangers whereas the 13th game of the regular season for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers had a good bit of run of wins. They put up quite a show to win the match 4-1 which made it their fifth straight win in a row.
1st Period
The New York Rangers though were quick out of the blocks but they couldn’t carry the momentum and just managed a few shots during the opening part of the period.
The home team, Philadelphia Flyers on the other hand maintained a very tight defence and coupled with this was the fact of the splendid shots they came up with. The play that formed spectacular as they searched hard for a goal. But to the disappointment
of many they couldn’t come up with a goal.
Although the attacks that formed got them close to scoring in the 14th minute but the shot went just wide. Despite the fact the away team’s defence was strong; they couldn’t find a way to stop the strong attack of the home attack. The Philadelphia
Flyers got a chance to go ahead once again in the 18th minute and then in the 19th minute. But the first shot was blocked after a superb save by the goal keeper and the second was denied due to the goal post.
The period ended with the teams deadlocked at 0-0. During the course of the first period, the New York Rangers made 2 goal attempts and the Philadelphia Flyers made 8 goal attempts with neither of the teams scoring.
2nd Period
The away team was quick in the 2nd period as they attacked from the very first play. This was rewarded with a goal in the 2nd minute as they took the lead. The goal was scored by Brandon Dubinsky from a flick shot from 21 feet that
was perfectly placed.
The home team responded to this with attacks too and in meantime displayed some excellent skills both at the team level and the individual level. All the players combined well which resulted in the Philadelphia Flyers levelling the scoring in the 6th
minute. The goal was scored by the Captain Mike Richards through a powerful strike from 18 feet.
After scoring the home team was very confident in the attacks they made. Their confidence coupled with the determination saw the Philadelphia Flyers take the lead in the 10th minute. The goal was scored by Blair Betts from a backhand shot. The
period was dominated by the Flyers as they dominated the defence, offence and midfield.
The home crowd went wild when the Philadelphia Flyers once again in the 16th minute. The goal was scored by Nikolay Zherdev through a decent strike from 39 feet. The period summed up a dominating period that saw the score 3-1 in favour of the
home team in the end.
During the period, the Philadelphia Flyers made 8 goal attempts scoring thrice while the New York Rangers made 9 goal attempts scoring once.
3rd Period
The home team carried their form and momentum into the final period. They continued to display the spectacular ice hockey. The hard work that they had put in saw the Philadelphia Flyers scoring once again in the 4th minute. The goal was scored
by Chris Pronger from a powerful strike from 62 feet.
After this, the away team started to come up with attacks too but they couldn’t score as the period and the match ended with the Philadelphia Flyers winning the match 4-1. During the course of the final period, the home team made 5 goal attempts whereas
the New York Rangers made 10 goal attempts.
"We just tried to find a soft spot on the ice," Richards said. "It seems like on their penalty-kill, they like to flood to one side. I knew that Giroux saw me and Ville, too. I was just hoping one of them would come up with the puck and they
did and 'G' made a great pass." 

"I just happened to come off the bench," Betts recalled. “Jeff Carter made a change. Scott Hartnell was putting pressure on (Del Zotto), enough pressure for him to lose control of the puck a little bit. I just happened to be at the right place
at the right time and put in the rebound."
