2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – New York Rangers win 2-1 against the Carolina Hurricanes
The first game of Wednesday was hosted by New York Rangers as they were up against the Carolina Hurricanes. The match was played at the Madison Square Garden with around 18,000 fans coming to witness the match this Wednesday. This was the 591st
game of the season which was decided in overtime. No goals were scored in the opening two period but both teams scored once in the final period which took the match into overtime where Mats Zuccarello’s goal won the match for New York Rangers. Goalkeeper Henrik
Lundqvist was named the star selection of the match with his 31 saves in the match.
The home team, New York Rangers was quick out of the blocks and fired shots on the opposing goal regularly. The developed some excellent pieces of play and added to this was the backing of the home crowd that gave them a further boost.
New York Rangers has several chances to take the lead but the opposing goal keeper did an impressive job. With the passage of time Carolina Hurricanes also grew in confidence and started to come across goal scoring chances. Carolina could have very well
taken the lead in the 11th minute but the shot was hit wide off goal with just the goal keeper to beat.
The period ended with the scores deadlocked on 0-0 with Carolina Hurricanes making 13 goal attempts while New York Rangers made 8 goal attempts.
After early domination in the second period by the Carolina Hurricanes which saw them making quite a few goal attempts, New York Rangers was on top. The remaining period saw the Rangers display some excellent ice hockey with the pin point passing and shooting
from everywhere on the pitch.
Unfortunately, despite all this the neither of the teams was able to capitalize and the period second period also ended with the scores on 0-0. During the 20 minutes of play Carolina Hurricanes made 8 goal attempts while New York Rangers made 15 goal attempts.
After a slow start to the final period, the home team started to construct dangerous attacks. They worked hard and constantly which was rewarded with a goal scored by Matt Gilroy in the 9th minute. After the goal both teams exploded with shots
from everywhere on the pitch.
Another goal was scored in the 14th minute, this time it was the Carolina Hurricane who levelled the scores through Eric Staal’s goal. There were several more goal attempts but none of the shots found the back of the net.
The period and the regulation time ended with the scores level on 1-1. As a result, the match went into overtime.
During overtime, Mats Zuccarello scored in the 4th minute for the Carolina Hurricanes as they won 2-1.
