Thursday, 21st October 2010 saw the Toronto Maple Leafs play host to the New York Rangers. The game took place at Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This game was the 83rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premier Series
as the New York Rangers played their 5th game of the regular season and the Toronto Maple Leafs played their 6th game of the season thus far. The game was not as productive in terms of goals as anticipated but the 3 goals provided a lot
of excitement to the game enthusiasts. The end of the match saw the away team bag 2 goals to win the match.
1st Period
The home team started the match on a high as they came up with splendid plays during the early few minutes. They kept control of the possession and fired shots regularly that didn’t let the away team settle.
The tactics and the mentality of the Toronto Maple Leafs worked only for a few minutes. The reason for this was the fact that the home team left open spaces at the back. When with the constant attacks that the New York Rangers came up with, they gained confidence.
The few away fans support seemed to work for the Rangers as they scored in the 17th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Ruslan Fedotenko from a close range flick.
The Rangers kept on pushing forward despite of being in the lead. This worked as they scored once again to establish a 2 goals lead. The 2nd goal came in the 18th minute when Artem Anisimov scored another well worked goal from 10 feet.
At the end of the period, the New York Rangers led the match 2-0 as they scored twice out of the 15 goal attempts and the Toronto Maple Leafs made 8 goal attempts but didn’t score any goals.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw both team adopt defensive mentality at the beginning of the period which gave the fans very few exciting moments as the attacks were cut off from the middle every now and then.
Both teams were content on not conceding any goals but as the game went into the second half of the period, both of the teams started to change the game as they attacked frequently. Both teams tried hard to score but none of the shots found the back of the
net and the period ended with the score 2-0 still in favour of the New York Rangers.
During the course of the period, the New York Rangers made 7-goal attempts and the Toronto Maple Leafs made 8-goal attempts but neither of the teams could score.
3rd Period
The last period saw the away team begin the period in very attacking mentality and they tried their level best to score.
The put all of their men forward in order to score but the classic and extravagant finishing displayed by them in the 1st period was lacked in the final period. Though the Rangers displayed some excellent skill on ice and accurate shooting, they
couldn’t meet their fans expectations.
However, the home team was able to get one goal back in the 12th minute to keep hopes of a comeback alive but this was not to be. The goal was scored by Colby Armstrong from 17 feet through a perfect flick shot.
The period didn’t see any more goals and the New York Rangers won the match 2-1. In the period, the New York Rangers couldn’t score though they made 10-goal attempts and the Toronto Maple Leafs made 6-goal attempts and scored once.
At the end of the game the Toronto Maple Leafs Coach Ron Wilson said, "They managed to get two (early) and then muddied up the game," He added, "We didn't want to get our nose dirty by going into the hard areas, coming across to support the puck. We got
what we deserved."
"The last game we didn't score a five-on-five goal for almost the same reason," Wilson continued, "We weren't willing to go to the front of the net. If anything, we've got some great lessons to be learned."
