2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series– New York Rangers win 3-2 against Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime

The 251st game of the regular season saw Pittsburgh play at home against the New York Rangers this Monday. The match took place at the CONSOL Energy Centre in front of 18,000 fans as the New York Rangers played the 18th game of their
campaign while the Pittsburgh Penguins played the 19th game of their respective campaign thus far.
The match was level till the end until the New York Rangers scored in overtime to clinch the match 3-2.
Both teams made a cautious start to the match and were content on not letting the other team get in front. Though they came across scoring chances but the lapse of concentration at the end hindered the teams from scoring in the first period.
The period ended with the teams deadlocked at 0-0. During the course of the 1st period, the Pittsburgh Penguins made 12 goal attempts while the New York Rangers made 5 goal attempts.
The 2nd period of the match provided a tough 20 minutes for the teams as they couldn’t find goals despite coming across numerous scoring opportunities. The away team was successful in breaking the deadlock to take the lead in the 11th

The final period of the match saw the Pittsburgh Penguins press on in search of a goal right from the beginning. This resulted in the Pittsburgh Penguins levelling the score in the 18th minute. The goal was scored by Chris Kunitz through a decent
strike.
The home team’s hard work saw them taking the lead in the 19th minute when Matt Cooke scored. However, the New York Rangers scored in the final period that took the match into overtime. The goal was scored by Marc Staal through a powerful strike.
 
The final period of the match saw the New York Rangers making 8 goal attempts while the Pittsburgh Penguins made 14 goal attempts.
Overtime saw the goal scored in favour of the New York Rangers. The goal was scored in the 4th minute by Ryan Callahan through a tip in shot that won the away team the match 3-2.
At the end of the match Ryan Callahan, right winger of the New York Rangers was named the 1st star selection of the match.
