2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Ottawa Senators dominate against the New York Islanders to win 4-1

The New York Islanders were up against the Ottawa Senators this past Thursday as part of the 175th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. There were around 18,000 fans that came to the Scotiabank Arena to witness the match hoping for
the home team, Ottawa Senators to record a win. Both teams started off the match pretty well but it was the Ottawa Senators who grabbed the chances and converted them into goals to win the match 4-1 at the end.
1st Period
Both the team adopted an attacking mentality from the start of the match. However, defence was given importance but the offence was the main area where both teams worked hard. Willing to attack at the cost of almost anything there were some splendid plays
seen during the course of the period.
The home team grew in confidence as time passed they started to come up with strong attacks. The attacks were rewarded in the 13th minute when the home team took the lead. The goal was scored by Sergei Gonchar through a splendid flick shot that
was perfectly placed from 26 feet.
Both teams came across more scoring opportunities but much to their disappointment, they couldn’t find the back of the net. The period ended with the Ottawa Senators in the lead with the score at 1-0. During the 20 minutes of play, the Ottawa Senators scored
1 goal out of the 10 goal attempts they made. On the other hand, the New York Islanders didn’t score any goal out of the 11 goal attempts they made. Though the New York Islanders came close to scoring in the 17th minute, but were denied of an equalizer
by the goal past as the away team went into the break trailing.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw the home team come out hungry for goals. They were determined to demolish and seal the match in the 2nd period. Their dominance and skill was displayed by the level of game they came up with in the 2nd
period.
The home team not only kept possession of the puck for long periods of time but they converted it into goals as well. They managed to score in the 4th minute of the match to double the lead. The goal was scored by David Hale from a flick shot
from 17 feet.
The home team continued to attack the opposing goal firing some venomous shots which resulted in the Ottawa Senators scoring once again. The goal was scored by Jason Spezza from a spectacular powerful strike from 28 feet that went flying into the back of
the net. The period ended with the Ottawa Senators leading 3-0.
During the 20 minutes of play, the Ottawa Senators made 11 goal attempts and scored 2 goals while the New York Islanders made 9 goal attempts without any goals.
3rd Period
The away team was able to pull one goal back in the final period. The goal was scored by Matt Moulson from 9 feet through a decent strike.
The period progressed and the away team gained confidence and attacked frequently. However, they committed too many men forward which went against them. As a result, the Ottawa Senators scored to bag their 4th goal of the match. The goal was scored
in the 18th minute by Chris Kelly from a decent strike from 22 feet.
The period and the match ended with the Ottawa Senators winning the match 4-1. During the final period, both teams scored once with the Ottawa Senators making 6 goal attempts and the New York Islanders making 10 goal attempts.
At the end of the match goal keeper of the Ottawa Senators Brain Elliot said, "After the first save, you're pretty confident (with the second guy) coming down,"
Elliott said. "It's just one of those games that you have to try to see what happens and give the guys a chance to win.”
