2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Ottawa Senators win 3-1 against the New York Rangers at their home
The 2nd game of Sunday saw the Ottawa Senators up against the New York Rangers. The match was played at the Madison Square Garden, home of the Rangers with around 18,000 fans coming to witness the match. This was the 392nd game of the
NHL regular season with the Ottawa Senators playing their 28th game while the New York Rangers played the 29th game of the season thus far.
Both teams started cautiously not attacking. The main area of concentration was passing and defence. Each squad wanted to beat each other on passing. No rash or careless attacks were seen during the opening 20 minutes of play.
The home team initiated the early attacks but with the passage time, the away side also came up with scoring chances. The Ottawa Senators passing and combination got better and better with time.
Though there were good goal opportunities for both teams but they failed to score and the period ended with the scored deadlock at 0-0. During the 20 minutes of play, the New Rangers made 5 goal attempts while the Ottawa Senators made 10 goal attempts.
The 2nd period saw Ottawa Senators continue with the strong attacks from the previous period. They continuously attacked. The away side finally broke the deadlock with a goal in the 5th minute. The goal was scored by Chris Kelly from
a flick shot.
The away side took the foot off the gas after scoring but this went against them as the home side managed to score in the 11th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Brandon Prust through a decent strike. With the scores levelled once
again, both teams went on the attack and displayed some excellent passing.
However, the period ended with the scores levelled on 1-1 but both teams had loads of confidence heading into the final period. During the 2nd period, the Ottawa Senators made 8 goal attempts while the New York Rangers made 13 goal attempts.
The final period of the match started with the home team attacking and coming up with absolutely splendid plays. However, it was the Ottawa Senators that scored in the 18th minute to take the lead once again. The goal was scored by Chris Kelly
who bagged his second goal of the night.
The Ottawa Senators continued their hunt for another goal and scored in the 20th minute to establish 2 goals to their advantage. The goal was scored by Chris Kelly who completed his hat-trick.
The period and the match ended with the Ottawa Senators emerging as 3-1 winners of the match. During the 20 minutes of play, the Senators made 7 goal attempts while the Rangers made 8 goal attempts.
