2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Ottawa Senators win 5-3 against the Florida Panthers

The 132nd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the Ottawa Senators play the Florida Panthers. The game took place at the home of the Ottawa Senators at the Scotiabank Arena this Thursday. There were around 16,000 fans that came to
cheer their respective teams to victory. This was the 8th game of the Florida Panthers and the 10th game for the Ottawa Senators of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series this far. The home dominated play after trailing at the end of
the 1st period and won the match 5-3 in the end.
1st Period
The home started with a lot of confidence and dominated the early few minutes of the period. They fired shots at the opposing goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. The home team grew in confidence and put all of their men on the attack.
However, this turned out to be against the home team as they were caught on a counter attack. The Florida Panthers scored as a result in the 11th minute. The goal was scored by Bryan Maccabe from 46 feet through a powerful strike. Taking the lead,
the Panthers tried to attack but the home team’s defence was too strong.
The period didn’t see any further goals as the period ended with the Florida Panthers in the lead. During the course of the period, the Ottawa Senators made 10 goal attempts and the Florida Panthers made 5 goal attempts scoring once.
2nd Period
The home team kicked off the 2nd period in a spectacular manner as they put pressure on the opposing team from the start of the period. In fact, the first 4 attacks of the period were made by the Senators.
The power of the Ottawa Senators proved to be too much as the Ottawa Senators were able to level in the scores in the 6th minute. The goal was scored by Milan Michalek from 30 feet through a spectacular flick shot.
From then onwards the Florida Panthers came up with some shots but couldn’t find any goals. The Ottawa Senators caught the opposing team on a counterattack and took the lead in the 14th minute. The goal was scored by Mike Fisher. The goal came
as a result of a perfectly placed flick shot that went through the legs of the goal keeper.
When play restarted, the home team continued to put pressure and scored in the next minute to take the score to 3-1. The goal was scored through simple tap in from 3 feet by Zack Smith. Not stopping from attacking the opposing team, the Ottawa Senators kept
the attacking mentality intact which resulted in both teams coming across numerous scoring chances. The period ended with the Senators in the lead.
During the course of the period, the Ottawa Senators scored 3 goals out of the 11 goal attempts they made and the Florida Panthers made 8 goal attempts without any goals.
3rd Period
The Ottawa Senators carried the momentum from the last period and scored in the 2nd minute to establish 3 goals lead to their advantage.
Alex Kovalev’s goal took the scored to 4-1. The goal came as a result on an extravagant backhand shot from 4 feet. The Ottawa Senators scored once again to take the score to 5-1. The goal was scored by the Captain of the Ottawa Senators, Daniel Alfredsson
from 33 feet through a powerful shot.
The Florida Panthers responded to this with a goal in the 7th minute. The goal was scored by Chris Higgins through backhand shot from 17 feet. The Ottawa Senators managed to pull another goal back when they scored in the 20th minute.
The goal was just a consolation goal with the score on 5-3.
The match ended on the same score as the both teams scored 1 one goal out of the 29 goal attempts during the period.
Captain of the Ottawa Senators said, "We all know that it's a lot easier to play with the lead," Alfredsson said. "That first goal for us short-handed was huge for us to get the momentum."
