The 26th of October 2010 saw the Philadelphia Flyers thrash the Buffalo Sabres 6-3. The game took place at the Wells Fargo Centre, home of the Philadelphia Flyers. This was 10th game of the Buffalo Sabres and the 9th game
of the Philadelphia Flyers of the campaign thus far. One of the most awaited and exciting games of the NHL season provided a lot of entertainment with numerous shots and goals during the course of the 3 period. Though it was not a bad performance by the Buffalo
Sabres it was just that Philadelphia Flyers played better.
1st Period
The Buffalo Sabres were the stronger of the two teams as the period began. They came up with extravagant pieces of play and took the lead in the 9th minute. The goal was scored through a spectacular 60 feet shot that was helped a little deflection
on its way. The goal was scored by Thomas Vanek, who bagged his 4th goal of the season thus far.
The Buffalo Sabres made a wrong decision in continuing to attack the opposition with full force after scoring the goal and this went against them.
The home team was able to level the score through a counter attack in the 16th minute. The goal was scored by Danny Briere from close range from a perfectly placed flick shot. There were no further goals during the final 4 minutes of the period.
The period ended with both team scoring a goal each with the Philadelphia Flyers making 12 goal attempts and the Buffalo Sabres making 8 goal attempts.
2nd Period
The Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres both started the 2nd period with strict attacking mentality not thinking about the defence. During the course of the period, there were around 50 goal attempts by both teams!
However, it was the Philadelphia Flyers who was the more productive in scoring goals. The first goal of the period was scored by Nikolay Zherdev from 18 feet through a powerful shot. Taking the lead, the home team with the backing of the home crowd pressed
on in search of another goal. They were successful in scoring once again.
The Philadelphia Flyers scored their 3rd goal of the match through Darroll Powe through a simple tip in from 7 feet. The goal put the home team in a comfortable position with the score in 3-1. Completely demolishing the away team the Philadelphia
Flyers finished any chances of a Buffalo Sabres comeback when they scored once again in the 16th minute. The goal was scored by Claude Giroux from a tip in from 18 feet and took the score to 4-1.
The period ended with the same score as the Philadelphia Flyers scored 3 goals out of the 15 goal attempts whereas the Buffalo Sabres couldn’t score despite making 12 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period was the most exciting of the 3 periods. The Philadelphia Flyers carried their last period’s form into the final period.
The crowd went wild when the home team scored once again. The goal was scored by Jeff Carter who scored in the 2nd minute. He hit the shot from 32 feet with a lot of power and with a little help through a deflection took it to the back of the
net.
With the score 5-1, the home team sat back enjoying possession until a mistake in the 8th minute saw the Buffalo Sabres scoring through Tyler Myers. With the score 5-2, the home team didn’t take it seriously and another mistake saw the Buffalo
Sabres score once again. This time it was Steve Montador who scored from 26 feet. The score was 5-3 at the time and the Buffalo Sabres saw chances of a comeback.
However, the home team was content on not letting this happen and they sealed the win with a goal in the 18th minute. The goal was scored by Andreas Nodl from a spectacular shot that was hit from 46 feet and went flying into the net.
The game ended as the Philadelphia Flyers won the match 6-3. At the end of the match Philadelphia Flyers Coach Peter Laviolette said,
"I thought the momentum switched around then," Laviolette said. "We were sluggish in the first five minutes of the first and that seemed to be the turning point there. It seemed to bring a little energy to the building, a little energy to the bench
and we were able to play better hockey."
