2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Philadelphia Flyers take lead after winning 3-2 against Washington Capitals
Philadelphia Flyers hosted the 684th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series as they were up against Washington Capitals.
The match was played this Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Centre with around 20,000 fans coming to witness the match with the Flyers looking to win and get into the lead.
This is exactly what the Philadelphia Flyers did winning 3-2 after overtime. This effectively put them in the lead as the Canucks lost their game.
Jeff Carter was named the star player of the match with his goal and an assist.
Philadelphia Flyers were aware of the fact that they needed to make a strong start to the match if they were to win against the strong offensive Washington Capitals team. This is exactly what the Flyers did getting past the opposing defence regularly and
making goal attempts early on.
Though chances came for both teams, it was the Philadelphia Flyers that scored in the 2nd minute through Jeff Carter to get into the lead. The goal was scored through a brilliant wrap around shot.
Washington Capitals also made a couple of shots on goal but unfortunately they couldn’t score in the period, which was totally dominated by defence in the end. Despite the hard work of both teams, no further goals were scored and the period ended with the
Philadelphia Flyers leading 1-0.
During the course of the period Washington Capitals made 6 goal attempts while Philadelphia Flyers made 8 goal attempts.
The second period was pretty much a reflection of the first period with the only difference being the fact that an early goal wasn’t scored. It took some time for the second goal of the match to be scored.
Both teams worked hard and in doing so constructed brilliant pieces of play. However, it was the Philadelphia Flyers, who scored the goal to double the lead. The goal was scored by Claude Giroux from a well placed flick shot.
There were a few more shots on goal as the period neared its end but the period ended with the Philadelphia Flyers leading 2-0 at the end. The period saw Philadelphia Flyers making 8 goal attempts while Washington Capitals made 6 goal attempts.
The final period started off with both teams attacking right from the word go. Philadelphia Flyers in search of a dominating win while the Washington Capitals looking for a comeback. Shots flew from everywhere on the pitch.
Washington Capitals successfully scored two goals in quick succession through Mike Knuble and Alex Ovechkin in the 8th and 9th minute respectively. This effectively levelled the scores but unfortunately no further goals were score even
though several goal attempts were made by both teams.
The period ended with the scores level on 2-2 with both teams making 12 goal attempts each in the period and the game went into overtime as a result.
During overtime, Andrej Meszaros scored from a powerful long range strike to win the match 3-2 for the Flyers, which put them at the top of the league.
