2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Philadelphia Flyers win 5-4 against the Washington Capitals after shootout
Washington Capitals against the Philadelphia Flyers was the 287th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The game was played at the Verizon Centre, home of the Flyers in front of 18,000 fans as both the teams played the 21st
game of their respective campaign.
The home team was quick and successful in making early goal attempts but unfortunately couldn’t score. The away side also had the opportunities but like their counterparts, failed to convert the chances into goals.
The home team grew in confidence with the passage of time and with the backing of the home crowd scored in the 9th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Marcus Johansson through a flick.
The period ended with the Washington Capitals leading 1-0 as they made 10 goal attempts while the Flyers made 9 goal attempts.
The 2nd period of the match saw the away team start off with a different strategy which worked for them. They piled up attacks after attacks which resulted in the away side successfully levelling the score in the 14th minute of the
period. The goal was scored by Claude Giroux from a simple tip in shot.
The away side continued to attack and was rewarded with a goal in the 18th minute of the period. The goal was scored by Mike Richards from a flick shot that put the away side in the lead.
The period ended with the Philadelphia Flyers leading 2-1 as they made 16 goal attempts while the Washington Capitals made 13 goal attempts.
The final period of the match saw the Philadelphia Flyers score early on to take the score to 3-1 in their favour. The goal was scored by Jeff Carter in the 10th minute. The home team responded to this with strong attacks too and scored in the
12th minute through Nicklas Backstrom.
The home team kept on piling the pressure until they managed to level the score with a goal in the 12th minute once again. The goal was scored by Jason Chimera. The score at the time was level on 3-3 but the Philadelphia Flyers caught the home
team by surprise and scored in the 14th minute to regain the lead. The goal was scored by Andreas Nodi from a backhand shot.
However, the home team successfully scored in the final minute of the period through Eric Fehr to send the match into overtime as the score was 4-4 at the time.
The overtime didn’t see any goals being scored and the match went into shootout. During the shootout, the Danny Briere’s goal proved to be the difference as the Flyers won the match 5-4.
