2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Phoenix Coyotes lose 2-3 against the Montreal Canadiens in after overtime
The Montreal Canadiens played host to the Phoenix Coyotes as part of the 115th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The game took place at the Centre Bell Arena this past Monday. There were around 22,000 fans that came to witness the
match as the Phoenix Coyotes played their 7th game and the Montreal Canadiens played the 8th game of their campaign thus far. The game was a very interesting and tough battle as the Montreal Canadiens finally won the match in overtime.
1st Period
The 1st period started slowly for both teams as they were constantly trying to outnumber their counterparts at the back. The defence was strong for both teams as they cut off any attacks that could have been a potential dangerous.
The attacks on the other hand were extravagant pieces of play that saw players combine and show some excellent skill while in possession. Both teams attacked every now and then. But they couldn’t score. The determination of scoring was a lot in both teams,
which can be seen from the fact that they started to make long range shooting when they couldn’t find a way past the defence.
It was the Montreal Canadiens that finished the period strongly as they came up with around 5 goal attempts during the last 2 minutes of the period.
Both the teams had the share of the chances during the period but it was either the shot that went wide or the goal keeper who made an excellent save. The period didn’t see any goals as the Phoenix Coyotes made 11 goal attempts and the Montreal Canadiens
made 10 goal attempts without any goals.
2nd Period
Though the home team were the stronger of the two teams at the end of the 1st period and started the 2nd period strongly but they weren’t the team that scored.
A mistake at the back saw the Phoenix Coyotes scoring in the 3rd minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Kyle Turris, who bagged his 3rd of the season through a flick shot from 21 feet.
The home got back together and continued the game that they had been playing and scored to level scores. The goal was scored by Tomas Plekanic from 30 feet spectacular strike in the 8th minute. With the scores level the home team was more confident
of the two as they scored the goal. The backing of the home fans helped the Montreal Canadiens, as they scored in the 10th minute to take the lead.
The goal was scored by Michael Cammalleri from 29 feet through a perfectly places flick shot. Both teams opted for a defensive mentality after this. Though there weren’t any more goals but brilliant pieces of play were observed during the 2nd
half of the period.
The period ended with the Montreal Candiens in the lead with the score 2-1. During the period, the home team scored 2 goals out of the 8 goal attempts they made and the Phoenix Coyotes scored 1 goal out of the 7 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period started and ended strongly for the away side as they scored in period to send the match into overtime.
The goal was scored in the 2nd period through a Derek Morris shot that was a result of a powerful shot that was made from 55 feet. Both teams had the share of the chances but there were no further goals during the regulation time period.
The period ended as both teams made 10 goal attempts and the Phoenix Coyotes scored 1 goal and levelled the game.
During the overtime, the Montreal Canadiens scored in the 2nd minute to win the match. The goal was scored by Andrei Kostitsyn from a powerful stroke from 24 feet. The game ended as the Montreal Candiens won the match 3-2.
"We found a way to lose the game again tonight," said goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, who was outstanding with 26 saves, including one on a Cammalleri breakaway in the third.
"We've had three overtime games and we've lost them all."
"He's just playing well," Cammalleri said. "He's got a compete level in his game right now that's really nice. Even early in the game you see him get in there and finish checks and turn pucks over and create offense."
