2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Pittsburgh Penguins win 2-1 against the Ottawa Senators
The 324th of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played at the Consol Energy Centre this Friday. The match played between the home side Pittsburgh Penguins up against the Ottawa Senators. The match was played in front of 18,000 fans as
the Ottawa Senators played their 23rd game while the Pittsburgh played 24th game of the campaign so far.
Both teams exploded at the start of the match. Shots flew from everywhere on the pitch as both teams search a goal that would put them in the driving seat. The Pittsburgh Penguins had the advantage of making quite a few early goal attempts but they couldn’t
convert them into goals.
The home fans were disappointed but they went completely silent when the Ottawa Senators scored in the 13th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Jesse Winchester through a flick shot. The Ottawa Senators successfully piled up shots
after shots after the goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. As the period neared its end, the Penguins started to come up with strong and smooth plays but didn’t score.
The period ended with Ottawa Senators leading 1-0 as they made 21 goal attempts while the Pittsburgh Penguins made 14 goal attempts.
The 2nd period started on a high for the Ottawa Senators as they attacked and came across scoring opportunities. The Ottawa Senators in their search for another goal left open spaces at the back. Realizing the threat of Pittsburgh Penguins taking
advantage, they switched to a defensive mode.
As a result, Pittsburgh Penguins started to construct attacks and scored in the 11th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Evgeni Malkin through a flick shot. With the scores level and confidence following the home side continued
to attack.
The Penguins almost took the lead with a goal in the 15th minute only to be denied by the goalkeeper. The period ended with no further goals and score level on 1-1. During the course of the period the Ottawa Senators made 11 goal attempts while
the Pittsburgh Penguins made 20 goal attempts.
The final period of the match saw the Pittsburgh Penguins start strongly as they attacked the opposing team regularly. This time they were rewarded immediately with a goal in the 6th minute of the period. The goal was scored by Alex Goligoski
through a wrist shot.
The period saw the Penguins coming across numerous scoring chances but they failed to capitalize and the match ended 2-1 in favour of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The final period saw the Ottawa Senators making 12 goal attempts while the Pittsburgh Penguins
made 9 goal attempts.
At the end of the match Coach of the Ottawa Senators said, "They skated right up behind Mike and as soon as he turned, the guy picked him and they scored the winning goal," Senators coach Cory Clouston said. "It ended up being the winning goal."
