2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Pittsburgh Penguins win 5-1 against the Philadelphia Flyers
The 58th game of the 2010 NHL Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the Philadelphia Flyers play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The match took place this Saturday, 16th of October at the Wells Fargo Centre. The match was a close encounter
but the Pittsburgh Penguins carried their form from the last win and won the match 5-1 eventually. The match started at 6:06 local time with around 20,000 fans present to support their respective teams.
1st Period
It was the Pittsburgh Penguins who got off to a flying start as they came up with many goal attempts. The Pittsburgh Penguins who won the 2009 Stanley Cup were looking to dominate the proceedings from the start by scoring a goal.
This was not to be as the Philadelphia Flyers were the first to score. The goal was scored in the 7th minute that put the home team in the lead. The goal was scored by Danny Briere from a wrist off, 6 feet away from goal. Taking the lead, the
Philadelphia Flyers was looking to establish a further lead but this was not to be.
The regular attacks that they were coming up with meant that they left open spaces at the back and this was punished by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 12th minute when they scored through Chris Kunitz. The goal was a result of an excellent wrist
off shot from 21 feet. With the scores level at 1-1 there was nothing much to talk about during the last part of the period as both teams went into the break with the same score.
The period ended with both teams scoring 1 goal with the Pittsburgh Penguins making11 goal attempts and the Philadelphia Flyers making 8 goal attempts.
2nd Period
The period saw the home team Philadelphia Flyers dominate the proceedings without any doubt. They not only displayed brilliance and class in passing but also attacked regularly. Despite the fact that the Pittsburgh Penguins defence was very strong, the skill
and game plan they adopted, enabled the Flyers to make goal attempts.
Dominating much of the 2nd period, the home team couldn't find the final touch that would send the puck into the opposing goal. The Philadelphia Flyers were able to restrict the Pittsburgh Penguins to their own half during the first half of the
period.
However, there was a change in momentum as the period was nearing its end. The Pittsburgh Penguins defence started to get stronger and come up with quite a few counter-attacks. One such counter-attack in the 20th minute saw the Pittsburgh Penguins
take the lead. The goal was scored by Mark Letestu from a wrist off shot from 14 feet.
The period ended with the score 2-1 in favour of the Pittsburgh Penguins who scored the only goal of the period after making 12 goal attempts. The Philadelphia Flyers on the other hand couldn't score any goals though they made 17 goal attempts.
3rd Period
The 3rd period was totally dominated by the away side, Pittsburgh Penguins who displayed excellent abilities and scored 3 times during the course of the period.
The first goal came of the period came through the Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins who scored in the 4th minute to take the Pittsburgh Penguins to the score 3-1. The goal was a result of an excellent shot from 35 feet.
The 2nd goal of the period also came in favour of the Pittsburgh Penguins once again and the Captain was the goal scorer once again. He scored in the 6th minute from 57 feet through a slap off shot. The Pittsburgh Penguins were leading
by 3 goals with the score 4-1 and adding insult to injury they scored once again in the 17th minute to wrap up the match 5-1. The goal was scored by Matt Cooke.
After winning the match, Captain Sidney Crosby said: "When we do get those chances, we have to make the most of them,"
Crosby said. "We got them and found a way to hit the net."
"Whether they're questionable (calls) or deserved, we're going to the box, and it ended up costing us," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said.
"Penalties are avoidable. It taxes the penalty killers. It taxes the defensemen. We're not scoring five-on-five, and that doesn't help, but now we're on defence again. That's not good enough. We have to be more disciplined."
