2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Pittsburgh Penguins win 5-2 against the Ottawa Senators

The Pittsburgh Penguins played the Ottawa Senators this Monday, 18th October 2010. The game took place at the CONSOL Energy Centre, home of the 2009 Stanley Cup Champions Pittsburgh Penguins. The home team were looking to continue on their winning
streak, after their last couple of wins. An attendance of around 18,000 charismatic NHL fans was witnessed at the Arena as the game started. The Pittsburgh Penguins dominated the game through, scored 3 goals in the opening period, and won the game 5-2 in the
end.
1st Period
The 1st period didn’t see any defensive obstacles in the way as the players went on the attacks. There were numerous attacks from both teams but to the disappointment of both teams, there were no goals early on.
As the period progressed, both team settled and the Pittsburgh Penguins looked the more confident and determined team to score. They came up with regular shots on goal along with some splendid pieces of play. They worked hard to get past the opposing defence
and found Mark Letestu in an open position. The player took full advantage of this and scored from a 30 feet wrist off shot that found the back of the net. The goal was scored in the 9th minute and promised us an exciting 10 minutes of the remaining
period.
The home team continued to fire shots and dominate possession that ended with applause from not only the home but the away fans as well. The hard work paid off once again in the 14th minute when the Pittsburgh Penguins doubled their lead. The
goal was scored by the Captain, Sidney Crosby who led by example for the rest of the team members to score from 7 feet through a wrist off shot.
The Pittsburgh Penguins pressed on and didn’t back down despite the 2 goals advantage. This resulted in the 2009 Champions displaying some brilliant skills and abilities while on the ice. Consequently, they scored in the 18th minute. The goal
was scored by Evgeni Malkin from 8 feet through a wrist off shot.
At the end of the period, the Pittsburgh Penguins scored 3 goals after making 17 goal attempts and the Ottawa Senators made 12 goal attempts but didn’t score any goals.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw the shift in momentum and the away team gained some confidence and came up with attacks too. This confidence was further boosted when the Ottawa Senators scored in the 6th minute to cut the 3 goals lead.
The goal was scored by Daniel Alfredsson from 37 feet through a wrist off shot. The goal took the score to 3-1 in favour of the Pittsburgh Penguins. On the contrary, the Pittsburgh Penguins were content on cutting down any chances of the away team’s come-back.
They were successful in doing so when they scored 2 goals in the 11th minute to take the score to 5-1. The 1st goal was scored by Pascal Dupuis who fired a 13 feet shot that established the 3 goals lead once again.
The 2nd goal came in the 11th minute, this time it was Kris Letang through a slap off from 51 feet. The period ended with the score 5-1 in favour of the home team.
3rd Period
The 3rd period didn’t see much happen during it as the Ottawa Senators scored the only goal of the period. The goal was scored by Chris Campoli in the 5th minute from 36 feet when he hit a fabulous slap off shot.
During the last period, the Ottawa Senators made 11 goal attempts scoring once and the Pittsburgh Penguins made 5 goal attempts but none found the back of the net but it was enough to register a 5-2 win.
At the end of the match commenting on the goal keeper, the Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Dan Bylsma said,
" Marc-Andre Fleury is our franchise goalie and he's our No. 1 guy."
"He's a guy we count on to be a great goaltender for us and make big saves, just like he has in the past. He'll get to do that again. His teammates are confident what he's going to bring to our team."
