2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – San Jose Sharks win 4-2 against the Colorado Avalanche

21st October, 2010 saw the Colorado Avalanche play host to the San Jose Sharks. The game took place at the Pepsi Centre in front of around 13,000 fans. This was the 90th game of the regular season as the San Jose Sharks played the 5th
game and the Colorado Avalanche played the 7th game of the regular season thus far. The game was pretty much even but the San Jose Sharks were able to convert their chances into goal that resulted in them winning the game 4-2.
1st Period
The period kicked off on a high for the Colorado Avalanche as they dominated play early on and with the attack up front they gave the opposing some scare at the start.
The Colorado Avalanche displayed some excellent skill and abilities during the course of the period. They kept the possessions and formed plays slowly which were effective and got dangerous every time they attacked. They not only fired shots from close but
the long range was also spectacular.
Their hard work was rewarded when they scored in the 15th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Kyle Cumiskey from a powerful shot that he hit from 40 feet. Taking the lead, the Colorado Avalanche preferred to attack at the last stages
of the period rather than to protect the lead. This went against them as the San Jose Sharks scored at the end of the period with just 5 seconds of play left. The goal was scored by Scott Nichol who scored from 5 feet from a brilliant backhand.
The score was level as both teams went into the break with the Colorado scoring once out of the 15 goal attempts they made and the San Jose Sharks also scored once out of their 13 goal attempts.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw the away team dominate the proceedings. The away team decided to approach the game with attacking mentality rather than to sit back and wait for chances to come. They attacked every now and then coming up with potential goal
scoring opportunities early on.
Their efforts and change in strategy paid off at once as they scored during a power play in the 2nd minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Joe Pavelski from 9 feet shot that went flying into the goal. The San Jose continued to press on
not letting the home team settle. However, the home fans tried to back their team but the power in the San Jose front was too much.
The San Jose Sharks took advantage of the strong offensive line that they had and scored in the 9th minute to establish a 2 goal lead. The goal was scored by Joe Pavelski once again through some fabulous wrist work from 7 feet. The period saw
the away team dominate the proceedings and the defence didn’t allow the opposing team to come near their goal.
The period ended with the San Jose Sharks in the lead with the score on 3-1 as they scored twice in the period.
3rd Period
The last period saw the San Jose Sharks start off slowly as they were in the lead and content on improving their defence rather than scoring goals.
This didn’t happen as hopes of a Colorado comeback became alive when the Avalanches scored in the 8th minute to take the score to 3-2. The goal was scored by Milan Hejduk who scored from 10 feet.
The San Jose Sharks made sure that they had no chance of a comeback and sealed the win by scoring in the 19th minute to win the match 4-2. The goal was scored by Logan Couture from an amazing 93 feet shot. This ended the period as the San Jose
Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche scored 1 goal each during the period.
"I couldn't tell from where I was," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said.
"I know a few of the players thought that it hit their bench, but the referee said it hit the linesman. That's why they didn't blow it down."
"It's pretty straightforward, it was a well-played game but in the second period we take four penalties in a row," Sacco said.
"Against that team, you can't do that. That's two games in a row now where we're taking too many unnecessary penalties. To me, simply, it was the difference in the game."
