2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – St. Louis Blues win 2-0 against the San Jose Sharks

The 176th game of the NHL regular season took place as the St. Louis Blues was up against the San Jose Sharks. The match took place at the Scottrade Arena, home of the St. Louis Blues this Thursday. There were around 19,000 fans that came to witness
the match as the San Jose Sharks played the 11th game and the St. Louis Blues played the 10th game of their campaign thus far. Both teams were equal on paper but the St. Louis Blue with the advantage of being the home team pulled off
the win 2-0.
1st Period
The San Jose Sharks got off to a flying start as they attacked the opposing team every now and then. Not only did they dominate the game in the department of offence but they maintained a very tight defence. Coupled with this was the fact that the San Jose
Sharks had some brilliant pieces of play developing on their way. The only problem was the lack in the department of finishing.
The home team started to put the foot on the gas after the 10th minute and made quite a few attacks but they preferred shooting from long range rather than going near to the goal. However, when the period was nearing its end the home team committed
all of its men forward.
Though this was a risk but the St. Louis Blues scored to take the lead. The goal was scored late in the 18th minute. The goal came as a result of a spectacular shot from 39 feet by D’ Agostini. The home team carried the dominating performance
till the end of the period but they couldn’t score any further goals.
At the end of the first 20 minutes was 1-0 in favour of the St. Louis Blues as the teams went into the break. During the period, the St. Louis Blues made 8 goal attempts with 1 goal whereas the San Jose Sharks made 9 goal attempts without any success.
2nd Period
Though the St. Louis Blues made a slow start to the 2nd period but when they settled they played with so much confidence and it looked as if it was a game between the first and the last teams in the standings. They dominated play from up front
to the back.
The San Jose Sharks tried desperately to get past the defence but such was the tightness in the defence of the St. Louis Blues that they didn’t even give them space to make goal attempts. Coupled with this was the fact that the away team was restricted to
their half for almost all the period.
The hard work that the home team put in was rewarded in the 15th minute when they scored to double the lead. The goal was scored by David Perron from a splendid backhand shot from 16 feet that went in through the legs of the goal keeper. Both
teams had a few more goal scoring opportunities but they couldn’t score.
Both teams went into the break with the score 2-0 in favour of the St. Louis Blues. During the course of the 2nd period, the home team scored once out of the 14 goal attempts whereas the Sharks made only 5 unsuccessful goal attempts.
3rd Period
The final period didn’t see any goal during the final 20 minutes as the St. Louis Blues won the match 2-0. The final period saw the St. Louis Blues make 7 goal attempts while the San Jose Sharks made 11 goal attempts as the St. Louis Blues won the match.
"I didn't know if I would be all right or not," Perron said after the game. "I feel fine right now. Fortunately I got to bounce back and score a big goal for us, and we got the win."
"I felt like I established myself on the ice," the Sharks' captain said.
"I just braced myself for the hit. He just ran into me, to be honest with you."
"Not very good," Coach Davis Payne of the St. Louis Blues said when asked about his power play's lack of production.
"Fortunately for us, it wasn't the issue in the game. We were still able to get two goals and win the hockey game."
