2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Tampa Bay Lightning win 5-3 against the Pittsburgh Penguins
The 126th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series saw the Tampa Bay Lightning play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game took place at the St. Pete Times, home of the Tampa Bay Lightning this Wednesday. This was the 10th
game played by the Pittsburgh Penguins and the 9th game for Tampa Bay Lightning, in the regular season thus far. The match was very exciting from the start as both teams scored a total of 5 goals in the first period and Tampa Bay Lightning won the
match 5-3.
1st Period
Tampa Bay Lightning started the period strongly, scoring in the 3rd minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Dana Tyrell who scored through a splendid shot from 12 feet. Taking the lead, the home team continued to put pressure on the opposing
team which went against them.
The Pittsburgh Penguins managed to score and level the match in the 4th minute. The goal was scored by Craig Adams. The goal was scored through a powerful shot that was hit from 31 feet. Though the game was level, the Pittsburgh Penguins preferred
staying on the offence rather than staying back. They worked hard and got past the defence regularly and within no time, scored to take the lead. The goal was scored by Matt Cooke through a spectacular backhand shot that was hit from 20 feet.
The home team got into the flow and started to gain confidence and attacked the opposing team, taking on the defence. This resulted in the Pittsburgh Penguins scoring once again to took the score to 3-1. The goal was scored by Pascal Dupuis from 18 feet
through an extravagant 18 foot shot.
Tampa Bay Lightning managed to pull one goal back before going into the break. The goal was scored by Teddy Purcell from the distance of 29 feet through a perfectly placed flick shot. The period ended with the score 3-2 in favour of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
During the period, the Pittsburgh Penguins scored 3 goals out of the 12 goal attempts and Tampa Bay Lightning scored twice out of the 8 goal attempts.
2nd Period
Both teams got off to a flying start when they fired shots at opposing goals and scoring almost instantaneously.
However, the first and only goal of the match came in the 9th minute which was in favour of Tampa Bay Lightning and levelled the score at 3-3. The goal was scored by Captain Vincent Lacavalier through a powerful shot from 30 feet.
There were no further goals even though both teams had numerous scoring opportunities. The period ended with the scores level. During the period, the Pittsburgh Penguins made 10 goal attempts without any goals and the Tampa Bay Lightning scored once out
of the 11 goal attempts they made.
3rd Period
The home team, Tampa bay Lightning had a good start to the 3rd period and took the lead in the 7th minute when they scored via St Louis’s 17 feet strike that went flying into the goal. With a goal to the advantage, the home team pressed
on for another goal and came close to scoring once again in the 8th minute only to be denied by the post.
The Pittsburgh Penguins had their chances too but couldn’t find the final touch and it was Tampa Bay Lightning who scored to seal the win in the 17th minute. The goal was scored by St Louis once again through a 25 foot shot that found the back
of the net.
The period and the game ended with the Tampa Bay Lightning winning the match 5-3.
At the end of the match the Pittsburgh Penguins Captain said, "There's not much to say ... we got beat," said Sidney Crosby, who was limited to one assist. "Gave up too many opportunities and didn't execute on the ones we got. We didn't deserve that one,
definitely."
