2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Toronto Maple Leafs win 4-3 against the New York Rangers in overtime
Friday, 15th of October 2010 saw another one of the momentous matches in the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. The match saw the Toronto Maple Leafs up against the New York Rangers at the Madison Square Garden, home of the New York Rangers.
The match saw around 18,000 fans come in support of their cherished teams.
The Toronto Maple Leafs was playing in the 4th match of their campaign and the New York Rangers was playing the 3rd match of the campaign but 1st match at home. The game saw Toronto Maple Leafs dominate one period that set
the stage for an exciting showdown. The game was level at 3-3 when it went into overtime and the Maple Leafs emerged as the victors in the end with the score on 4-3.
1st Period
The first period saw the away team Toronto Maple Leafs come up with good shots on goal along with some splendid play that was observed during the first few minutes of the period. The Maple Leafs was quick to get out of the blocks, and it seemed to carry
the form from the last game where they defeated the 2009 Stanley Cup Champions, Pittsburgh Penguins. Despite early goal attempts, the Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t gain and the score was all level.
However, the home team had the momentum and confidence along with the backing of the fans. This enabled them to come up with an excellent display of ice hockey. The New York Rangers didn’t let the Toronto Maple Leafs settle and they scored in the 8th
minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Michal Rozsival from a distance of 47 feet. The game was played with the same flow until the end when the period ended with the score still 1-0.
During the course of the period, the Toronto Maple Leafs came up with 16 goal attempts but couldn’t find the back of the net. The New York Rangers, on the other hand, scored 1 goal from the 7-goal attempts they made.
2nd Period
The 2nd period was totally dominated by the Toronto Maple Leafs. From the very start of the period, the away team looked in deadly form as a 79 feet hit, 89 feet hit and 94 feet hit all went past the goalkeeper barely missing the goal. Not only
was this the highlight but there was some absolutely splendid passing that was witnessed.
The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t let chances go vain this time out and scored in the 3rd minute to level the score at 1-1. The goal was scored by Clarke Macarthur through a tip in from 17 feet. With the scores level, the Toronto Maple Leafs continued
their search for another goal. They were successful in doing so and took the lead in the 5th minute when Mike Komisarek scored from 38 feet.
Though the Toronto Maple Leafs was leading with the score 2-1, they knew that this was not enough so they pushed for another goal. With hard work and determination, the Toronto Maple Leafs scored once again to establish a 2-goal lead as the goal by Phil
Kessel took the score to 3-1.
The period ended with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the lead with the score on 3-1 and all 3 goals coming in this period after their 14 goal attempts. New York Rangers made only 5 goal attempts but didn’t score.
3rd Period
The final period didn’t see much happening as the New York Rangers levelled the score after scoring twice.
The first of the goal came in the 3rd minute with the goal scored by Brain Boyle from 24 feet that took the score to 3-2. Trailing behind by just one goal, the New York Rangers pressed and much to the relief of the home fans, they scored and levelled
things. The goal came from Brain Boyle once again scoring in the 7th minute from 34 feet.
The period ended with the score 3-3 and the game went into overtime. In the overtime, Toronto Maple Leafs scored in the 4th minute during power play through Phil Kessel. The goal won them the match 4-3 as Kessel bagged his 2nd goal
of the match.
