2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Toronto Maple Leafs win 5-4 against the Washington Capitals after shootout
The 2nd game of Monday and the 397th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played at the Verizon Centre, home of the Washington Capitals. The match saw the home team playing host to the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of around
18,500 fans. This was the 26th game of the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs while the Washington Capitals played the 29th game of their campaign.
The match was a very intense battle right from the start with both teams looking to score as early as possible. The Washington Capitals were the stronger of the two teams early on in the match. The home team’s attacks and plays were absolutely splendid.
They capitalized from a chance they got in the 3rd minute to take the lead.
The goal was scored by Mathieu Perreaullt through a simple tip in shot. The home team dominated the game for couple of minutes before the away side settled down and started to combine well with each other. The Maple Leafs also displayed the strong attack
they had with some brilliant pieces of play.
The away side successfully scored in the 12th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Clarke MacArthur from a decent flick shot. The home side quickly responded after losing the lead with attacks and some pin point passing.
The Capitals determination to take the lead saw them scoring in the 15th minute. The goal was scored by Mike Knuble from a perfectly placed flick shot.
The period ended with the Capitals making 12 goal attempts while the Maple Leafs made 7 goal attempts.
The 2nd period was evenly matched if we talk about shots on goal. The Washington Capitals made 9 goal attempts while the Toronto Maple Leafs made 11 goal attempts. But it was the Capitals who won in terms of productivity.
The home side scored in the 7th minute through Mathieu Perreaullt’s flick shot to take the score to 3-1. The Capitals further strengthened their lead by scoring once again in the 14th minute. The goal was scored by Alex Ovechik. The
away side absolutely had no answer to this and the period ended with the Capitals leading 4-1.
The final period was dominated by the Maple Leafs. They knew that they had to score as soon as possible if they are to have any chance of winning. They successfully scored in the 5th minute through Mikhail Grabovski.
The away side quickly levelled the scores as they scored in the 18th and 19th minutes to take the match into overtime. The first goal was scored by Tim Brent while the second was scored by Clarke MacArthur.
The period and the regulation time ended with scores levelled on 4-4. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the match with Mikhail Grabovski’s goal in the overtime making the difference.
