2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series Update – Tampa Bay Lightning win 4-3 against the New York Rangers
New York Rangers playing host to the Tampa Bay Lightning was a mid table battle which was expected to be a very tough and interesting match. The 509th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series certainly proved to be a tough and hard fought
encounter which was decided in shootout as the Tampa Bay Lightning won the match 4-3. Tampa Bay Lightning played the 35th game of their campaign while the New York Rangers played the 36th game of the season at the Madison Square Garden.
Both teams made a great start to the match firing shots regularly and combining very well right from the word go. Tampa Bay Lightning struck first blood as they scored in the 2nd minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Martin St. Louis
from a quick fired and well placed strike that caught the goalkeeper by surprise.
The home team also pushed forward with force and successfully levelled the score with a goal in the 12th minute. The goal was scored by Ruslan Fedotenko from a powerful strike which was followed by another goal within the next 30 seconds. Alex
Frolov’s flick shot put the puck into the back of the net and the home team in the lead.
Tampa Bay Lightning were determined to level the scores before the end of the period and in doing so they came up with some decent pieces of play. The away side was successful in levelling the score in the 19th minute through Steven Stamkos.
The period ended with the scores levelled on 2-2. During the course of the period Tampa Bay Lightning made 7 goal attempts while the New York Rangers made 10 goal attempts.
The 2nd period started with the same energy as the first period with both teams attacking right from the start. The productivity of goals was less in the period though the goal attempts were exactly the same compared to the first 20 minutes of
play.
Tampa Bay Lightning got into the lead with a goal in the 15th minute through Vincent Lecavalier’s simple tip in shot. This was the only goal of the period and the period ended with the Tampa Bay Lightning leading 3-2 at the end of the period.
During the 20 minutes of play Tampa Bay Lightning made 7 goal attempts while the New York Rangers made 10 goal attempts.
The final period was dominated by the home team as they restricted Tampa Bay Lightning to 3 goal attempts and made 17 goal attempts themselves. It took them sometime but they scored in the 12th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by
Derek Stepan and the score was 3-3 at the end which took the match into overtime.
During overtime no goals were scored but Ryan Malone’s goal in shootout won Tampa Bay Lightning the match 4-3 with Martin St. Louis named the star selection of the match.
"It was huge," said St. Louis, who had a goal and an assist. "Last night, we didn't play the way we wanted. I thought tonight, we responded. We got the two points before Christmas."
