2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series Updates – Montreal Canadiens win 2-1 against Pittsburgh Penguins in shootout after a hard fought contest
Montreal Canadiens had the honour of hosting the 600th game of the regular season as they were up against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The match took place this Thursday at the Centre Bell with around 21,000 fans coming to witness the match. The match
turned out to be very intense battle and the result was surprising as Montreal Canadiens won the match 2-1 after overtime. Benoit Pouliot, left winger of the Montreal Canadiens was named the start selection of the match for the crucial goal he scored.
Pittsburgh Penguins made a brilliant start to the match firing shots and attacking right from the start. They didn’t give Montreal Canadiens any space and time as a result they couldn’t settle. Pittsburgh with the strong frontline managed to take the lead
in the 3rd minute.
The goal was scored by Arron Asham from a well placed flick shot. Pittsburgh Penguins continued to pile pressure and could very well have scored another goal in the 14th minute but the shot went just wide. Montreal Canadiens also made a few goal
attempts but they couldn’t score.
The period ended with Pittsburgh Penguins leading 1-0. During the course of the period Pittsburgh Penguins made 13 goal attempts while Montreal Canadiens made just 5 goal attempts.
The second period saw the winds change directions with Montreal Canadiens attacking and combining well together. The home team’s defence was also commendable as they restricted the Penguins to long range shooting only.
Montreal Canadiens on the other hand continued to press on. It took them some time but they finally scored through Benoit Pouliot in the 13th minute to level the scores. The period ended on a high note for Montreal Canadiens but they couldn’t
convert their chances into goals.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1. During the period Penguins made 7 goal attempts while Canadiens made 13 goal attempts.
There was again a change of momentum in the final period as Pittsburgh Penguins emerged as the stronger team in the final period. They not only made goal attempts and got themselves into scoring positions but also came up with an impressive offence.
Though they couldn’t score any goals in the period but they kept the Montreal Canadiens under pressure. The period ended with the score level on 1-1 with Montreal Canadiens making 4 goal attempts and the Pittsburgh Penguins making 12 goal attempts.
The match went into overtime where no goals were scored but once again Benoit Pouliot’s goal in shootout proved to the difference as the Montreal Canadiens won the match 2-1.
