2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Vancouver Canucks win 2-1 against Colorado Avalanche in a very tough encounter
The 579th game of the regular season saw Colorado Avalanche play host to Vancouver Canucks. This was a very important match for Vancouver as a win would put them at the top of the league standing with Philadelphia winning against Detroit. The
match was played this Sunday at the Pepsi Centre in front of around 15,000 fans. The match was a defence dominated game where scoring chances were rare and difficult. However, Vancouver Canucks managed to emerge as 2-1 winners of the match resulting in them
leading the league. Roberto Luongo, goalie of Canucks was named the star selection of the match making 31 saves.
Colorado Avalanche made a decent start to the match firing shots regularly and combining well to get past the opposing defence frequently. The home team dominated every department but they miserably failed when it came to finishing. They had several goal
scoring chances but didn’t score any goals.
On the other hand, Vancouver Canucks started to attack as they settled into the match with the passage of time. The away side successfully scored in the 19th minute through Alexandre Bolduc to take the lead. They had more goal scoring opportunities
but failed to capitalize and the period ended with Canucks leading 1-0. During the period, Canucks made 8 goal attempts while Colorado Avalanche made 10 goal attempts.
The second period was again very tight with both teams constantly trying to get past the defences. Though they succeeded in doing so but the finishing being poor didn’t help the cause.
This remained a problem for both sides and no goals were scored in the period. The period ended with Vancouver Canucks leading 1-0 as they 10 goal attempts in the period while Avalanche made 9 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play saw Vancouver Canucks started strongly and they scored in the 4th minute through Mason Raymond to double their lead. Though Colorado Avalanche scored in the 14th through Paul Stastny from a decent strike,
but it proved to be just a consolation goal as Vancouver won 2-1.
