2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Vancouver Canucks win 2-1 against the Florida Panthers
The last game on Monday took place between the Vancouver Canucks and the Florida Panthers. There were about 19,000 fans present at the Rogers Arena to witness the 33rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series. This was a low scoring encounter
that saw the Vancouver Canucks win 2-1 against the Florida Panthers.
1st Period
Both teams tried hard to score in the opening period and had their share of chances. Despite the fact that the Canucks were the more dominating of the two teams in the period but they couldn’t convert those chances into goals.
Then started a period that was dominated by the Florida Panthers, but they too couldn’t score. It was not that the teams had strong defences; in fact they had a very weak defence from which the offence easily escaped to find players in open positions.
The period saw the Vancouver Canucks score in the 13th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Daniel Sedin. He scored from a distance of 13 feet after hitting a wrist off. The rest of the period didn’t see much happening as both teams
came up with occasional chances but didn’t score. The shots either went wide or found the goal keeper.
The period ended with the Florida Panthers coming up with 13 goal attempts out of which they scored no goals. Whereas, the home team Vancouver Canucks scored only once out of the 12 goal attempts they made.
2nd Period
They 2nd period was once again a reflection of the 1st period where the chances came but the transition of teams from defence to attack was slow. Though some of the shots were very effective and almost found their way into the net but
just at the last moment, the goal keepers made some brilliant saves.
The Vancouver Canucks were content on not letting their lead slip and maintain a good and tight defence. The defence was almost non-porous but what proved to be lethal for the Vancouver Canucks was the long range shooting that the Florida Panthers started
to adopt. They hit shots from long range that the defence couldn’t stop and the keeper was also caught off guard at times.
The hard work of the Vancouver Canucks paid off when they scored in the 20th minute of the 2nd period. The goal was scored by Rostislav Olesz from a splendid 38 feet shot that went in through a deflection. The period ended with the
score deadlocked at 1-1. During the period, the Washington Capitals weren’t able to score as they came up with 11 shots. The Vancouver Canuck made 10 goal attempts and scored once to level things.
3rd Period
Following the trend, this period was no different from the last two. Slow on the start but turned into a tough battle as the match progressed. The match was tied up and when the clock showed 10 minutes left to play, both teams shifted gears.
The Vancouver Canucks had the benefit of being the home team. With the backing of the fans and confidence that oozed from their play, they scored in the 15th minute when Daniel Sedin bagged his 2nd goal of the match and put the Canucks
in the lead with the score at 2-1. The match ended on the same score as the Vancouver Canucks scored once out of the 12 shots they hit and the Florida Panthers didn’t score even though they made 19 goal attempts.
"I wouldn't say we were sharp, but it's still nice to get two and the win," said Daniel, who opened the scoring on a short rebound in the first period.
"We've strung together six good periods in two tough buildings and don't have anything to show for it, so that's a little disappointing, said Coach Peter DeBoer. "I like the way we're playing, this is a tough game for us back to back with Vancouver waiting
and fresh and we competed hard."
"That's as good a road game as we could play under the circumstances," DeBoer said. "To hold that team to two goals is a pretty good accomplishment. You should be able to come out with points. Unfortunately despite a bunch of chances, I thought Luongo had
all the answers today.”
