The 163rd and final game of Tuesday saw the Edmonton Oilers play host to the Vancouver Canucks. The game took place at the Rexall Place in front of 17,000 fans. This was the 11th game of the Vancouver Canucks and the 10th
game of the Edmonton Oilers in the campaign thus far. The match was anticipated to be very entertaining and it sure did. The away team started the match superbly and led 3-0 at the end of the 1st period. However, the Edmonton Oilers managed to crawl
back but fell short by 1 goal as the Vancouver Canucks won the match 4-3.
1st Period
The home team, Edmonton Oilers started the period in spectacular fashion as they made good and strong attacks. They displayed some excellent skills on the pitch displaying some brilliant passing and shooting abilities. Not only did they dominate offence
but they also dominated play in the department of defence.
However, it was the Vancouver Canucks who broke the deadlock to take the lead. The goal was scored in the 12th minute by Captain Henrik Sedin. The goal was a result of 33 feet shot that found a deflection in its way into the goal.
After taking the lead, the Vancouver Canucks kept on attacking in search of another goal. They came across scoring opportunity and scored in the 13th minute to double the lead. The goal was scored by Raffi Torres from 13 feet shot from perfectly
placed flick shot.
The away team continued the dominating performance and came up with another goal in the 16th minute to further strengthen their lead. The goal was scored Raffi Torres once again who bagged his 2nd goal for the night. Though the Vancouver
Canucks got more scoring opportunities but they couldn’t extent the lead.
The period ended with the score 3-0 in favour of the Vancouver Canucks. During the period, the Vancouver Canucks scored thrice out of the 11 goal attempts they made and the Edmonton Oilers didn’t score as they made 5 goal attempts.
2nd Period
The 2nd period saw the Canucks carry the momentum into the 2nd period as they made more shots on the opposing goal but this time they weren’t as successful.
As time passed, the home team settled and started to attack as well. They scored in the 10th minute to bag the only goal of the period. The goal was scored by Dustin Penner from a wrap around shot from 11 feet that went flying into the back of
the net. The home team showed some excellent skill while on the offence and maintained defence but they couldn’t find a way past the Vancouver Canucks goal keeper.
The defence of both teams after the goal was very strong and stopped any attacks that might have later become dangerous and resulted in a goal. Both teams also attacked coming up with numerous scoring opportunities.
The period ended with the score 3-1 in favour of the Vancouver Canucks. During the course of the 2nd period, the Vancouver Canucks made 10 goal attempts without any goal, whereas the Edmonton Oilers scored once out of the 12 goal attempts they
made.
3rd Period
The Edmonton Oilers made a good start to the final period as they scored in the 4th minute to level the score. The goal was scored by Ryan Jones from a spectacular shot from close range. The score at the time was 3-2 and gave the home team a chance
of a comeback.
When the Edmonton Oilers scored in the 6th minute to level the match, the home fans ran wild. The goal was scored by Gilbert Brule through a powerful strike from 38 feet. The score was 3-3 at the time with the momentum and backing of the crowd
in their favour.
But Raffi Torres’s third goal which proved to be the difference silenced the home crowd in the 10th minute. The goal was scored through a splendid 50 feet backhand shot. The game didn’t see any further goals as the period ended with the score
4-3 Vancouver Canucks.
During the period, both teams made 9 goal attempts with the Edmonton Oilers scoring twice and the Vancouver Canucks scoring one goal.
"I had a lot of good times here," said Torres, whose goal midway through the third period snapped a 3-3 tie and spoiled Edmonton's comeback from a three-goal deficit.
"This franchise was nothing but good to me. If you don't produce, the have to make changes. It's a nice feeling, obviously, but the win is more important right now."
