2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series: Washington Capitals 6-3 thrash Tampa Bay Lightning
The 219th game of 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played this Thursday between Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals at Verizon Centre, home of Washington Capitals, in front of some 18,000 fans. It was Lightning’s 15th
and Capitals' 16th game of the campaign. The match saw Capitals explode in the last period, scoring 4 goals to win the game 6-3.
The match saw both teams maintain good defences with decent attacking strengths up front. They came across many goal scoring opportunities but lacked the final touch which hindered them from scoring early on in the 1st period.
However, in the 10th minute, Lightning took the first lead with the goal coming of Teddy Purcell through a perfectly placed flick shot. After this, the period didn’t see much happening and ended with Lightning leading 1-0 as they made 13 goal
attempts while the home team made 8 such attempts.
Capitals started the 2nd period strongly and scored in the 3rd minute to level things up. The goal was scored by Tom Poti from an extravagant backhand shot that went flying into the back of the net.
Capitals then took the lead with another goal in the 8th minute. It was the result of another superb backhand shot by Mike Knuble. The period ended at 2-1 as Capitals made 8 goal attempts while Lightning 12.
The final period saw 6 goals being scored in 20 minutes. The first goal of the period was scored by Lightning in the 3rd minute through Ryan Malone via a perfectly placed flick shot in the right corner.
Now with the scores levelled, both teams intensified their attacks. It were Capitals who successfully regained the lead with a goal in the 5th minute. It was scored by Alexander Semin through a decent shot. Semin struck again for Capitals with
another goal in the 11th minute.
Lightning managed to pull one back in the 13th minute. The goal was scored by Steven Stamkos through a powerful shot that went flying into the net. Capitals were content on not letting the away team settle and scored 2 more goals.
The next goal was scored by Capitals' Captain, Alex Ovechkin in the 16th minute that took the score to 5-3 in favour of Capitals. They completed their victory with the final goal being scored in the 20th minute. Once again, the goal
scorer for Capitals was Semin who completed his hat-trick and led his team to a 6-3 victory in the game.
