2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Washington Capitals win 3-2 against the Carolina Hurricanes

The 345th game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played at the Verizon Centre this Sunday. The match saw 18,000 fans come to witness the spectacle as home team Washington Capitals took on the Carolina Hurricanes. This was the 23rd
game for the Carolina Hurricanes while the Washington Capitals played their 25th game.
Carolina Hurricanes made a decent start to the match as they fired shots at the opposing goal every now and then. They came close to scoring on several occasions but unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net.
However, with the passage of time the home team settled and came up with excellent plays. The strong and venomous shots they fired resulted in the Capitals taking the lead with a goal in the 7th minute of the period. The goal was scored by Marcus
Johansson through a perfectly placed flick shot.
The Washington Capitals continued to attack and during that time they constructed some excellent plays. The home team, with the backing of the fans managed to score once again in the 19th minute of the period to double the lead. The goal was scored
by Alexander Semin through a well placed flick shot.
The Washington Capitals fired a few more shots but they weren’t successful at scoring any further goals. The period ended with the home team leading 2-0. The Washington Capitals made 17 goal attempts while the Carolina Hurricanes 7 goal attempts.
The Carolina Hurricanes made a brilliant start to the 2nd period and the attacking mentality they adopted at the start saw them score in the 50th second of the period. The goal was scored by Erik Cole through a decent strike.
Both teams made numerous goal attempts but failed to score as the puck went to and fro. The defence of both teams was very strong after the first 10 minutes of the period. Neither of the defence players allowed the opposing offence players to get past them,
and as a result they were restricted to their half during the course of the 20 minutes.
The 2nd period saw the Washington Capitals leading 2-1 as the teams went into the break. During the 20 minutes of play, the Washington Capitals made 7 goal attempts while the Carolina Hurricanes made 6 goal attempts.
The final period of the match saw the home team explode at the start. They not only dominated possession but their offensive plays were superb. The Washington Capitals came close to scoring in the 10th minute but failed to capitalize from the
chances they got throughout the period.
The Carolina Hurricanes got stronger as the period neared its end. They managed to score in the 20th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Eric Staal through a decent strike. The scores were level as the teams went into the break
on 2-2.
Overtime didn’t provide any goals but Alex Ovechkin’s goal in shootout proved to be the difference as the Washington Capitals won the match 3-2.
