Wednesday, the 1st of December saw the 361st game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series hosted by the St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Centre. Around 19,000 fans came to visit the match as the home side
was up against the Washington Capitals. The match saw the Washington Capitals play the 26th game of the season while the St. Louis Blues played the 24th game of their campaign.
The St. Louis Blues made a good start to the match but it was the Washington Capitals who dominated the period after a few early scares were given to them.
The Capitals dominated every department on ice. Their passing was amazing, shooting was superb and defence was extravagant, that restricted the home side to long range shooting. Coupled with this was the fact that they managed
to score in the 9th minute to take the lead.
The goal was scored by Brooks Laich from a brilliant flick shot that broke the deadlock. The St. Louis Blues attacked once again with strong offence but unfortunately couldn’t score as the Washington Capitals led 1-0 into the break.
The period saw the Washington Capitals making 7 goal attempts while the St. Louis Blues finished with 13 goal attempts.
The 2nd period saw the away side continue with the dominating performance they came up with in the previous period.
As a result they came across scoring opportunities right from the start of the period. The Washington Capitals doubled their lead with a goal in the 11th minute. The goal was scored by Boyd Gordon through a well placed
and powerful strike which gave the goal keeper no chance of stopping it.
The St. Louis Blues also stepped up their game as the end of the 2nd period approached. The home team was able to pull one goal back as they scored in the 20th minute. The goal was scored by Alexander Steen
from a brilliant strike.
Both teams had their share of chances but couldn’t score as the Washington Capitals led 2-1 at the end of the 2nd period. During the course of the 2nd period both teams made 10 goal attempts.
The story of the final was similar to the last 40 minutes of play but the Washington Capitals was the winner of the period.
The Washington Capitals scored the first goal of the period in the 8th minute. The goal was scored by Nicklas Backstrom from a powerful strike. The score was 3-1 at the time and the home team responded to this with attack
after attack till the very end.
However, it was the Washington Capitals who scored in the final minute to seal the victory. The goal was scored by Nicklas Backstrom once again through a simple tip-in shot as the Capitals won the match 4-1.
