2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series – Washington Capitals win 4-2 against the Buffalo Sabres
The 260th game of the NHL regular season saw Washington Capitals host Buffalo Sabres this Wednesday. The match was played at the Verizon Centre in front of 18,000 fans that came in support of their cherished teams.
The Buffalo Sabres played the 20th game of their campaign whereas the Washington Capitals played the 19th game of the season thus far. Both the teams wanted to win but it was the home team that managed to win
the match due to strong attacking up front with the score 4-2.
The early part of the first period was dominated by Buffalo Sabres as they bombarded shots at the opposing goal frequently. However, the home team’s confidence grew with the passage of time. They started to work hard and their determination
saw them scoring in the 13th minute to take the lead. The goal was scored by Nicklas Backstrom from an excellent flick shot.
The home team continued to attack and took risks at times as they committed all of their men forward. This risk paid off as the Washington Capitals doubled the lead as they scored in the 18thminute. The goal was scored by Matt
Bradley through a decent strike that went flying into the back of the net.
The period ended with the Capitals leading 2-0 as with 11goal attempts while the Buffalo Sabres made 8 goal attempts.
The Capitals carried their superb form into the 2nd period and scored in the 3rd minute to take the score to 3-0. The goal was scored by David Steckel through a spectacular wrist shot.
The Buffalo Sabres knew that they couldn’t let the Capitals score more goals and had to score themselves if they were to have any chance of a comeback.
Therefore Buffalo Sabres scored in the 13th minute through Derek Roy’s well placed shot. The final goal of the period was also scored in favour of the Buffalo Sabres that cut the lead to just 1 goal. The goal was
scored by Jordan Leopold in the 14th minute.
The period ended with the Capitals leading 3-2 as the home team made 9 goal attempts and the Buffalo Sabres made 15 goal attempts.
The final period of the match saw both the teams trying hard to score but none of the 10 goal attempts made by the Buffalo Sabres saw the back of the net. However, the Washington Capitals sealed the win with a goal in the final minute
of the match by Alexander Semin through a flick shot as they made 9 goal attempts in the period and won the match 4-2.
