2010 Compuware NHL premiere series – Detroit Red Wings lose points and 4-1 against Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Penguins hosted the Detroit Red Wings in one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the season as things heat up at the top of the table.
A win for Detroit Red Wings would put them in the lead while a win for Pittsburgh Penguins would level them on points and tie them for 3rd position with the Red Wings.
The result though was a little unexpected, which saw the Pittsburgh Penguins comfortably winning 4-1 in the end. Marc-Andre Fleury, goal keeper of the Pittsburgh Penguins was named the star selection of the match with his 36 saves during the course of the match.
Both teams made a great start to the match and were on the offence right from the word go. They attacked and looked to score goals as soon as possible. Chances cam for both teams but unfortunately they weren’t able to capitalize in the early part of the period.
Pittsburgh Penguins with the backing of the home crowd started to step up their game, which Detroit Red Wings couldn’t match. Resultantly, Pittsburgh Penguins scored through Jordan Staal in the 4th minute to break the deadlock.
Both teams continued to attack and scoring chances kept on coming for both teams. However, it was the Pittsburgh Penguins, who successfully scored once again in the 12th minute to double their lead through Chris Conner’s backhand shot.
The attacking mentality continued till the very end of the period but no more goals were scored with Penguins leading 2-0 as they made 16 goal attempts while the Detroit Red Wings made 13 goal attempts.
The second period started off in similar fashion with both teams still attacking. There were several occasions where it looked as if a goal was on the way but no early goals were scored.
The period continued with the same flow but both teams made the attacks more intense as the period neared its end. Just when it looked that the period would end goalless, Detroit Red Wings opened their account scoring through Johan Franzen in the 18th minute.
However, Pittsburgh Penguins managed to score in the very same minute through Chriz Kunitz to regain the two goals advantage.
The period ended with Pittsburgh Penguins leading 3-1 as they made 9 goal attempts in the period while Detroit Red Wings made 14 goal attempts.
Detroit Red Wings started the stronger of the two teams in the final period attacking and keeping the Pittsburgh Penguins on the back foot. Red Wings could have very well scored goal but the finishing was poor.
However, Pittsburgh Penguins were able to seal the win scoring through Matt Cooke from a decent strike in the 19th minute. The period and the match ended with the Pittsburgh Penguins winning 4-1. During the course of the period Pittsburgh Penguins made 4 goal attempts while Detroit Red Wings made 12 goal attempts.
