2010 Davidoff Swiss Indoors: Roger Federer defeats Novak Djokovic, clinches championship title
Switzerland's Roger Federer came out victorious against on-court rival, Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the championship final of the 2010 Davidoff Swiss Indoors. Seeded no. 1 at the tournament, Federer got off to a good start, taking
the first set 6-4. However, it wasn't long before Djokovic responded with a 6-3 win in the second set. As evenly contested as the two remained, the deciding third set went in favour of the Swiss player as he took it based upon a 6-1 win, clinching his 65th
Career title in the process.
In the words of the professional himself, "It’s obviously a beautiful moment. It’s always very emotional and just a good feeling; I’m very happy. "I’ve had a great history here. I can’t believe I’ve been in the final so many times
and I’ve won already four times. I couldn’t be more happy today."
Additionally, Djokovic stated, “Overall it was a good week. The only thing today, which I think was bad, was the third set. I lost a little bit of balance and a little bit of focus and in a split second I was already 5-1 down and
there was no way back. I’d definitely like to congratulate Roger; he was the better player today. It was a great atmosphere; it’s always a packed house here, especially the last couple of days of the tournament."
Earlier, the no. 2 seed eliminated compatriot Viktor Troicki in the semi-finals of the tournament. Nole initiated the match with a 7-6 win and went on to take the second set 6-4. Meanwhile, Roger got through with America's Andy
Roddick in the semi-final match of his draw. Roddick lost a disappointing 2-6 and 4-6 in straight sets to Federer.
Federer defeated wild card entrant and the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek in the quarter-finals of the championship. Stepanek lost 3-6 in the first set and 2-6 in the set to follow. Radek got through with Columbia's Santiago Giraldo
in the second round of his draw. Giraldo was beaten 3-6, 6-2 and 6-0.
Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic (who has withdrawn from the Paris Masters because of a hip injury) faced defeat at the hands of Roger as he was thrashed 6-3 and 6-4 marking a straight set win for the Swiss maestro in the second round.
Tipsarevic deleted Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin in the first round of the tournament to proceed to oppose Federer. Istomin was defeated 6-2 and 6-4. Roger, on the other hand, eliminated Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov in his first round match, defeating him 6-4
in the first set and 5-2 in the second, right before Alexandr retired due to an injury.
