2010 Davis Cup: Colombia's Santiago Giraldo
beats Sam Querrey to level at 1-1
Santiago Giraldo from Colombia got the better of his American tennis foe, Sam Querrey in the 2010 Davis Cup with a total of three sets on Friday. The final match score remained 6-2, 6-4, and 7-5.
Meanwhile, in yesterday’s single clashes, Mardy Fish of U.S. defeated Alejandro Falla in a five set marathon. Their final match score was 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, and 6-4.
The champion of the tie will have a place in the 2010 Davis Cup World Group, the top tier of the championship. The United States of America has so far captured the Davis Cup title on a total of thirty two occasions, which is more than any other country.
Colombia, on the other hand, is attempting to make its way into the World Group for the first time.
The Doubles matches are scheduled for today with reverse singles on Sunday. Colombia is likely to field its doubles team consisting of Carlos Salamanca and Robert Farah. The Americans also have announced that they will counter with John Isner and Ryan Harrison.
Giraldo got the better of Sam during the third set to secure a lead of 6-5. He later served out to get his team even during the one hour and thirty five minutes clash. The Mardy/Falla clash took three hours and fifty nine minutes with Mardy breaking Falla
in the decisive last set. The home crowd of eight thousand fully supported Falla with their wild cheers.
“In my opinion, key to the match was staying ahead during the decisive set. I had some hard game to hold but good thing is that I successfully managed to stay far ahead of him. I remained focused and didn’t lose my concentration. Not for a single moment
I thought of giving up even though the match extended to five sets. When Falla had to serve at 5-4, that was the stage when the entire pressure kicked it,” said Fish.
Moreover, the coach of America who has announced his retirement, Patrick McEnroe, commented, “It was a bold mental effort by Fish which actually proved that being fit is so much important in the game of tennis.” Mardy suggested that both players might have
an easy go on another court. “Falla smashes the ball flat and therefore, in my opinion, he would have preferred a hard surface. Both of us would have preferred to battle on a hard court”, said Fish.
But still, the stats are almost even for the two players, although Mardy seems to have a clear edge in aces with his 8-1.
