2010 Davis Cup Finals: Serb Novak Djokovic thrashes Frenchman Gilles Simon
Nationally ranked no. 1, Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Frenchman Gilles Simon in straight sets to level Serbia with France at the 2010 Davis Cup Finals. Djokovic initiated the match with a 6-3 win and went on to take the remaining two sets 6-1 and 7-5 to
beat Simon.
Djokovic broke for a 4-3 lead, the first of four games in a row, bagging the first set and a break of serve just as the second set commenced. Simon nevertheless levelled up, shortly before his game fell apart. Novak produced one
winner after another as he took five straight games to lead 2 sets to 1.
Djokovic broke 2-1 for the second time in the third set and had a number of chances to bring the match to a close. However, Simon managed to initially save a number of match points to break Novak for 5-5 in the third set. Nole
then responded by breaking back and eventually taking the match and thrilling an almost innumerable crowd at Belgrade.
“It's one-all and I think it's a realistic result after the first day. We're confident we can still pull off the win," stated Nole.
Earlier, Frenchman Gael Monfils annihilated Serb Janko Tipsarevic defeating him 6-1 in the first set, 7-6 in the set to follow and 6-0 in the deciding third set.
After having lost to Monfils, Janko apparently fears being dropped out of the Davis Cup team after performing rather horribly.
"Honestly, I don't know whether I should play and what to expect, it's up to team captain Bogdan Obradovic. I will also speak to (Serbia's number three player) Viktor Troicki and see how he feels after Saturday's doubles, hopefully
we will head into that 1-1," Tipsarevic stated in a press conference.
After admitting that he was beyond nervous as far as his singles match against Monfils is concerned, Janko believes that he is more than ready to play this Monday and is mainly wants what is best for the team.
Additionally, the French pair of Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement will be opposed by Nenad Zimonjic and Victor Troicki of Serbia in the doubles category.
