2010 Davis Cup: Serb Nenad Zimonjic hoping to make history at championship final
Doubles specialist, Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic is apparently set to make history at the 2010 Davis Cup as the Serbian team searches for their first ever title at the Davis Cup. Aged 34, Zimonjic recently teamed up with Canada's Daniel Nestor and clinched the 2010
Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Finals title. However, the professional seems to want more.
"It is the biggest achievement that Serbia has as a country in tennis. I'm looking forward to... playing the biggest final in our tennis history. It would mean everything to the players, to the Federation, to people there, to say we are world champions. Maybe
not all of them knew what Davis Cup is. Now I believe they know that it's like a world championships in tennis," stated the Serb.
Zimonjic will most likely either be paired up with compatriot Novak Djokovic or fellow country man Victor Troicki. The Serbian doubles team is expected to go head to head with the French pair of Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement.
On the contrary, the French team that has 30 top ranked players are out to get their 10th Davis Cup victory. Taking the French team's capability into consideration, Nenad stated that the Serbian team cannot be compared to the French team as they are nine time
Davis Cup winners.
The professional also went on to add that he believes that eight or nine of the French players can play the Davis Cup any day. However, he went on to say that the two teams are well acquainted with each other and are good friends on and off court which will
help in such a situation.
Additionally, the Serbian team has come a long way. The young players are trained and managed to compete with World class players without the sort of resources and benefits that most tennis professionals enjoy. The Serbian tennis professionals have made a name
for their country in the sport nevertheless. A Davis Cup win would definitely boost the status of the country apart from bringing immense pleasure to the players.
