The 2010 Formula 1 season has been one of the most exhilarating, dramatic and definitely unpredictable seasons in F1 history. Formula 1 is one of the most professional and most watched motorsports in the world but this year, it
seemed that some of the drivers were just off their pace at some of the venues and out of frustration, tried to attempt some of the silliest manoeuvres we have ever seen.
Even though each race offered a unique experience this season was replete with unexpected results, the drivers making the wrong decisions and pulling some very awkward moves throwing away valuable points and in some cases ruining
other drivers as well.
Almost every season, drivers make stupid mistakes and one has to admit, that is how motorsports is. It is very sudden and almost impossible to react to actions that take place in the blink of an eye. So mistakes are a given but
this season saw some utterly moronic blunders and those too from the best in the sport. When all that was needed was a good clean race, to rack up points, drivers wiped out, sometimes taking others with them.
This year’s Champion, Sebastian Vettel was sloppy and almost on the forefront of this matter, committing some pretty stupid mistakes. Chief among these was his ‘manoeuvre’ in the Turkish Grand Prix. Possibly the most untimely of
all bungles, Vettel crashed into teammates Mark Webber’s car, taking him out of the race. What stung even more was Webber was in pole position while Vettel was bringing up the rear in 2nd. This incident cost Red Bull 43 points and the funniest part
is that both of the drivers were contending for the Drivers’ title. These sorts of incidents have happened many times in the past where two teammates have taken each other out but since Red Bull was running for a vital 1st, 2nd win, this
move drove a rift between the two which was not resolved and with Vettel’s actions in the Brazilian Gran Prix, denying Webber lead and subsequent win of the Driver’s title, it seems like only more fuel has been added to the fire.
The master of accidents and drama Lewis Hamilton also did not want to be left out of the raucous as he too took out two drivers with him in two different races in Italy and Singapore. What is amusing is that he tried to execute
the exact same manoeuvre in both races and ended up out of both. Lewis Hamilton was leading the Driver’s standings and had the best chance of retaining his lead as both Italy and Singapore were suitable for this year’s MP4-25.
At first, Lewis tried to take on Felipe Massa but failed badly after colliding with his car. This cost Lewis valuable points and his Driver’s standings lead. Similarly, Hamilton made almost the exact same move in a similar corner
in the next race as well. This time his victim was Mark Webber exiting from his second race in a row.
If Lewis Hamilton did not retire in these two races, he would’ve easily maintained his lead and obviously would have had a better chance for the 2010 Driver’s title.
The biggest mistake of them all it seems was by team Ferrari when they decided to pit Fernando Alonso after following Felipe Massa and Mark Webber’s footsteps in the grand finale. It was not actually Fernando’s fault but it cost
him the 2010 title that would have been his third one.
These sorts of mistakes happen but this year, it was disappointing to see them not from rookies but from the best. Had these pratfalls been avoided, the 2010 season would have had an altogether different result.
