2010 FIFA World Cup Shocks
The results of yesterdays FIFA World Cup games were strangely interesting and thus a wake-up call for many of the star studded teams. If they do not perform to the best of their abilities every given day in the field while playing in South Africa then their stardom is redundant.
If any team had even a tiny bit of doubt about this fact then yesterday games were definitely an eye opener for every team and just went on to prove a point. The point being that every team competing in the World Cup has some credentials to show for themselves which has made them eligible to be playing in the soccer fields of South Africa.
So with that said lets now go on and take a look at the events that unfolded yesterday in South Africa.
The first match of the day between Uruguay and South Africa did not offer any surprise that Uruguay won however, Diego Forlans goal which he blasted 25-metre from the goal was definitely a one off and then he even managed to later add a penalty kick to beat hosts South Africa with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline.
The Madrid star opened the scoring when in the 24th minute he slammed a right-footed shot from well outside the penalty area. It tucked under the crossbar thus giving the Uruguayan team first blood in the match and leaving the South African goalkeeper helpless.
With this win the Uruguayan team has now moved to the top of the Group A table.
Now Uruguay winning against South Africa was expected as the South Africans are not really known to be a top notch football nation especially at the international level. However what followed during the other matches was nothing short of shocking and disappointing.
Switzerland pulled off the biggest shock so far in the 2010 World Cup as they managed to beat European champions Spain 1-0 in their Group H match and thus recording their first ever victory over Spain in about 19 occasions they have met on the field.
The Swiss footballer Gelson Fernandes 52nd minute goal after a mix up in the Spanish defence gave the Swiss a shocking lead. Afterwards despite Spain, pressing down on the accelerator pedal and using every strategy and skill in the book, all their talent was just unable to find a way through the defense of the Swiss and despite many close calls the ball just could not find its way into the opposition goal.
The Swiss thus shockingly but deservingly share the lead in Group H with Chile, who also earlier in the day finally got their World cup dream realized after 48 years as they finally secured their first World Cup win edging past Honduras 1-0.
So then with all this drama in the day one was thinking, okay fine now the five time champions Brazil will be taking on the minnows North Korea and thus the fans can expect a complete goal-fest and some intense skill and strategy from the men in yellow and green.
However what followed was something the fans yet again were not expecting, as Brazil just managed to narrowly win 2-1 against the North Koreans, despite an attacking line that has the strength of players like Kaka and Robinho.
The North Koreans regardless of the result exhibited a great defensive strategy with which they managed to hold the Brazilians for a while before they managed to score the winning goals.
The Koreans exhibited great football skills and played an attacking game and thus were rewarded with a conciliatory goal in the 89th minute.
Both the teams now get a break before mighty Brazil face the Ivory Coast on Sunday in Johannesburg, while the North Koreans will take on Portugal in Cape Town on Monday.
