2010 Football World Cup Yellow and Red Cards
Yellow cards and red cards always bring a debate in football, but at this year’s Fifa World Cup, these cards are being talked about a lot.
Chile have collected the most yellow cards at this World Cup so far, a total of 10. Their last group game against Spain didn’t help matters. We are used to seeing a free-flowing style of play from Chile, but we saw a different side to them against Spain as they committed so many fouls and picked up numerous yellow cards.
Algeria have had two red cards, as well as Australia. Both are out of the World Cup.
Red cards will always be contested, and there have been some that have been given to players in bizarre circumstances. Kaká’s red card against the Ivory Coast was a shambles. Kaká was alleged to have elbowed the Ivorian in the face, but television replays showed a slight touch to the chest, and nowhere near the face.
France’s Yoann Gourcuff was sent off for a foul against South Africa when he was jumping in the air to head the ball. That was a harsh decision, while Miroslav Klose’s red card against Serbia was equally as harsh.
Yellow cards will be wiped out after the quarter-finals, a change this year to the previous World Cups.
Before their exit, Mexico had committed the most fouls, a total of 84.
As the tournament continues, more and more cards will be given, and whether they are correct or not is another matter.
