2010 Generali Ladies Linz; Ana Ivanovic cruises into the quarters
The twenty two year old Ana Ivanovic played some great tennis in her third round clash against the unseeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic at the 2010 Generali Ladies Linz singles competition on Thursday. The Serbian got past her opponent in two sets to reach the quarter final round in Linz. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
Ana, who is seeded seventh at the 2010 Generali Ladies Linz competition got a wild card in Linz after Serena Williams withdrew her participation at the last moment. Ana played with high level of dedication as she won the points throughout her clash versus Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic to confirm her quarter final berth. The Basel resident broke her opponent more than once to grab the points in quick succession and thus sealed victory in straight sets in the end.
The former world number one Ana who is currently ranked number twenty nine in the world by the Women Tennis Association has so far won a single Grand Slam title in Roland Garros back in 2008. The right hander is coming off her appearance at the 2010 China Open Women’s singles competition in Beijing where she got the better of Marion Bartoli of France in her opening round match in straight sets. In her next round clash, the Serbian brushed aside Olga Govortsova to set up a third round battle with Elena Dementieva.The world number nine Elena despite preventing a set point during the decisive set was toppled by the Serbian in two sets. The final match score was 7–6(2) 7–6(4). After an impressive performance in Beijing, Ana eventually was defeated at the hands of new number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in straight sets. The final match score was 1 6-7(1), 4-6. Caroline reached the number one spot after winning her quarter final clash at the China Open.
In other action, the second seed Daniela Hantuchova also posted a difficult win against Carla Suarez Navarro in two tough sets on Thursday. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3.
Daniela, as a result of this victory will next take on Patty Schnyder in the next round of the 2010 Generali Ladies Linz singles tournament. Patty made her way into the next round after brushing aside Klara Zakopalova in two comfortable sets on Thursday. The final match score was 6-2, 6-0.
Daniela after the match while commenting on her next round opponent said, “We have so much history, I have already stopped counting how many times we have played. I have a lot of respect for her game.”
The Slovakian tennis sensation who is currently ranked number twenty nine in the world has faced Schnyder on eighteen occasions so far in her career and leas the pair head to head encounter at 10-8.
Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova was defeated at the hands of Julia Georges in two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1. Julia has been performing quite well over the last few months.
A stunned Petra while commenting on her opponent’s game was of the view that she played some great tennis and played surprisingly well against her on Thursday.
"She played unbelievable. She played very fast and her forehand was amazing today and her serve also. I didn't have much chance,” Petra explained on Thursday.
Elsewhere, Eleni Daniilidou also got past Sybille Bammer in straight sets to progress further into the championship. The final match score was 6-1, 7-6(2).
