2010 Kremlin Cup Men’s and Women’s competition; Thursday’s Review
The Serbian tennis player Viktor Troicki bundled out the third seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his debut event in Moscow, getting past the French player in three sets at the 2010 Kremlin Cup on Thursday. The final match score was 3-6 6-3 7-5.
Tsonga after the match while commenting on his opponent’s game said, “You need to be hundred percent to defeat a contender of Viktor's calibre. Right now I am far from my best but hope to be in top form for the Davis Cup.”
Meanwhile, the sixth seed Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan and seventh seed Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine were also thrashed out of the tournament in Moscow as the local players continued to tumble.
The top seed Nikolay Davydenko was earlier defeated in his first round clash whereas his Russian countrymen and second seed Mikhail Youzhny withdrew from the competition as a result of a virus on Wednesday.
In the doubles action, the second seed pair of Lukas Dlouhy and Jeremy Chardy continued their run of form by knocking out Michael Russell and Pablo Cuevas in two sets to reach the semi-final round in Moscow on Thursday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
Lukas, who is currently ranked number three in the ATP doubles list with Laender Paes, posted back-to-back clash victories on the first occasion since a finalist show down at ‘s-Hertogenbosch back in June. He along with Laender is looking to grab one of
the five remaining spots in the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Jeremy and Lukas will next meet Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Kunitsyn, who got the better of Andrey Kuznetsov and Teymuraz Gabashvili from Russia in two sets in their final eight battle. The score line was 7-5, 6-3.
In the women’s side in Moscow, the 2008 Kremlin Cup winner, Jelena Jankovic was toppled in her opening round clash by a 17-year-old player Zarina Diyas, a qualifier from Kazakhstan on Thursday.
The top seed Jankovic lost in just fifty-nine minutes at the hands of a player who is only competing in her fifth Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event of her career. Jelena is one of the eight players who will be playing in the year ending WTA event in Doha.
"I have been sick since I came from China. I got an infection and have been on antibiotics for a week. I was not ready to play at my level. I was suffering but did not want to retire. I finished as well as I could but it was tough to focus on my tennis.
I had hard time breathing and I was getting tired quickly,” said Jelena after her loss on Thursday.
Diya, as a result of this victory will next face the sixth seed Maria Kirilenko, who dispatched off Kateryna Bondarenko in only fifty minutes in Mosow. The score line was 6-0, 6-0.
Meanwhile, two more players from Russia confirmed their quarter final berth at the 2010 Kremlin Cup Women’s singles competition as Vera Dushevina outlasted Elena Vesnina in two sets with a final match score of 6-4, 6-2, whereas Anna Chakvetadze brushed aside
Mariya Koryttseva, a qualifier in straight sets. The final match score was 6-1, 6-2.
Vera and Anna will next face each other in Moscow. Anna leads the pair’s head to head encounter at 2-0; however the last match they played against each other was a really close one until the end.
The other two quarter finals of the day will highlight the second seed Victoria Azarenka who will meet the seventh seed Alisa Kleybanova on Friday whereas Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez will play Dominika Cibulkova later in the day.
