2010 Kremlin Cup Men’s singles competition; Highlights from Wednesday
The top seed Nikolay Davydenko from Russia was upset by Pablo Cuevas on Wednesday at the 2010 Kremlin Cup Men’s singles competition in two sets. The final match score was 7-6(6), 7-6(5). The clash concluded in a time period of
one hour and forty eight minutes in Moscow.
World number forty seven, Pablo secured his first tour level victory versus the top twenty contender and as a result improved to 13-1 in tie breaks this year.
"It was a tough match and I am very glad to have defeated him here in Moscow. I hope to continue like this,” reflected Cuevas after the match on Wednesday.
World number eleven Nikolay dropped out of the top ten this Monday as a result of his first round departure at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2010 in China last week. The Russian who was the defending champion in China was bundled
out of the event at the hands of Zverev. He previously captured the Kremlin Cup trophy back in 2004, 2006 as well as 2007.
Meanwhile, the fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus got the better of his Italian foe, Potito Starace in a two setter clash to progress into his tenth ATP quarter or better in 2010. The clash was lasted for a time period of
sixty two minutes in Moscow. Marcos fired a total of eleven aces to get past his opponent on Wednesday. His best result so far this year has been a runner up performance at the Medibank International Sydney competition back in January.
Radek Stepanek, the fourth seed player from Czech Republic made his way into his fourth ATP World Tour quarter final or better of the year after dispatching off Mikhail Kukushkin from Kazakhstan in two sets.The final match score
was 6-3, 6-2. The battle was stretched to a time period of seventy one minutes.
The thirty one year old Radek, who was sidelined for almost three months earlier this season as a result of mononucleosis, smashed eleven aces to overpower world number seventy four Kukushkin. The Czech made his way into the title
battle at the Brisbane International event earlier in January, and as a result of his victory, improved to a match record of 14-13 this year.
Elsewhere, the eight seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia converted only one of six break point chances in his three setter defeat to Horacio Zeballos of Argentina on Wednesday.The final match score was 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The clash concluded
in one hour and fifty six minutes.
Last year’s winner Mikhail Youzhny on the other hand, announced his retirement from the tournament as a result of a viral infection. Mikhail is currently ranked number ten in the world by ATP and is fighting to secure a spot in
the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
"I have been sick for more than a week and it got worse during the doubles today. I am very disappointed not to be able to defend my title. I hope to be back in St. Petersburg next week,” added Mikhail after his withdrawal in Moscow.
In the doubles action, the top seed duo of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna started their tournament’s campaign with a three setter victory over Victor Hanescu and Leos Friedl on Wednesday.The final match score was 6-1, 3-6,
10-8. The Indo- Pak duo needed just seventy nine minutes to get past their opponent. As a result of this victory, they have improved their chances of qualifying for the season ending Finals.
Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Kunitsyn, wild card entrants from Russia also prevented six of seven break point chances to overpower the third seed pair of Igor Zelenay and Filip Polasek in seventy five minutes.The score line was 6-4,
6-3.
