2010 Kremlin Cup: Quarter-finalists (Women's Draw)
Qualifier Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas got through with the no. 1 seed, Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in the second round to make it through to the quarter-finals of the 2010 Kremlin Cup. Jankovic was defeated 6-1 in the first set
and 6-2 in the set to follow.
Diyas will now be facing Russia's Maria Kirilenko in the quarter-finals of her draw. Kirilenko eliminated Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko based upon a 6-0, 6-0, straight set win in the second round match played between the
two.
In an all-Russian encounter, Anna Chakvetadze will go head-to-head with compatriot Vera Dushevina in the quarter-finals of their draw. Ukraine's Mariya Koryttseva faced defeat at the hands of Chakvetadze, losing 1-6 in the
first set and 2-6 in the second. Dushevina, meanwhile, got rid of fellow countrywoman Elena Vesnina, taking the first set 6-4, followed by a 6-2 win in the second.
Seeded no. 8 at the tournament, Spain's Maria-Jose Martínez Sánchez defeated Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko in the second round to advance to the quarter-finals of the championship. Sánchez got off to a good start, taking the
first set 6-4. However, Bondarenko responded with a 6-1 win in the second. Nevertheless, the Spaniard bagged the final set based upon a 6-1 win, to be opposed by Slovakia's Dominika Cibulková.
Cibulková eliminated Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova 6-4 and 6-1 in the second round to make it through to the quarter-finals. Additionally, the no. 2 seed, Belarus' Victoria Azarenka will be opposed by Russia's Alisa Kleybanova
in the quarter-finals. Azarenka defeated Germany's Andrea Petkovic in the second round to proceed to the next.
Victoria started the match off taking the first set 6-4, right before Petkovic came back with a 6-2 win the second. Azarenka nevertheless bagged the third set 6-1 to mark her second round win. Meanwhile, Kleybanova triumphed
over Italy's Sara Errani, defeating her 7-6 in the first set, based upon a tie-break win and 6-4 in the second set, to take the match.
Prior to making it through to the quarter-finals, the first qualifier, Zarina defeated Argentina's Gisela Dulko in her first round match. Diyas took the first set 6-3. However, Dulko came back in the second set, only to take
it 7-6 based upon a tie-break win. Furthermore, it was the Kazakhstani that came out victorious, taking the third set 7-6 to advance at the tournament.
