2010 Kremlin Cup Women’s singles Competition; Victoria Azarenka lifts the title
The 21-year-old Victoria Azarenka from Belarus won the 2010 Kremlin Cup Women’s singles title on Sunday after thrashing out Maria Kirilenko in two sets in Moscow. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
The right hander has already qualified for the year ending WTA Tournament in Doha after winning her opening match in Moscow. Azarenka who was seeded number two to win the title at the Kremlin Cup defeated Andrea Petkovic in a three-setter clash to successfully
make her way into the elite eight women field in Doha.
The Arizona resident is coming off her appearance at the 2010 Toray Pan Pacific Open where she was given a beating at the hands of world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the semi final round in three sets. The score line was 6-2, (3)6-7, 6-4.
At the China Open Women’s singles competition in Beijing, the professional tennis ace from Belarus withdrew from her second round clash, against Timea Bacsinszky while leading at 6-4 2-3.
Victoria, who turned professional back in 2003, has so far won a total of two mixed doubles major crowns in her career, the United States Open back in 2007 along with her partner Max Mirnyi and the French open in Roland Garros, the following year with Bob
Bryan from the United States of America. The Minsk born has grabbed five singles titles so far in her career, including the Premier Mandatory 2009 Sony Ericsson Open and has also made three major final eight appearances.
While commenting on her title victory in Moscow, the 1.80 meters tall Victoria said on Sunday, "We showed some excellent tennis. I hope the crowd enjoyed it. Maria played really well and had a lot of motivation for her hometown final. The crowd was obviously
behind her, but that just motivated me more."
It was her second crown of the season, following another Premier-level win in Stanford. World number ten who achieved her career highest ranking of number six back in 2009 has now five WTA titles and stands at a final record of 5-6 on the tour.
When asked about her fifth career title, Victoria said that she is glad to win another crown and it will definitely help a great deal in playing with greater level of confidence in the season ending tournament in Doha.
Maria, on the other hand had blazed through the main draw at her home event, losing only nine games on her way into the title battle. Her performance throughout the tournament has also improved her career rankings into the top twenty on this week’s WTA ranking
list. The professional tennis player from Russia now stands at 5-4 in the career finals.
"I really wanted to win this tournament but Vika was better than me today. It is nice to finish the year with a great final. It gives me a desire to work harder and get better. I felt so much support from the crowd and it helped me all week to play well.
I am happy that from tomorrow I can put my racquets and tennis clothes away for a couple of weeks,” added Maria after the match on Sunday.
In the doubles action, the top seed duo of Flavia Pennetta and Gisela Dulko, grabbed their sixth crown of the season together after getting the better of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Sara Errani in three sets. The final match score was 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
It was Gisela and Flavia's fifth Premier-level crown of the year and gave them an extra push going into Doha, where they will also be seeded number one in the doubles event.
