2010 Kremlin Cup and If Stockholm Open highlights
The seventh seed Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine prevented three match points as he toppled his American opponent Michael Russell in a three setter clash in his opening round match of the 2010 Kremlin Cup Men’s singles competition on Monday. The final match
score was 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
The right hander Sergiy, who made his way into the final eight as a qualifier in Moscow back in 2008 faced three match points when his American opponent served for the clash at 5-4 during the decisive set on Monday.
Russell could not convert his opportunities, and Sergiy went on to take the last four games to clinch a win in Moscow. The clash concluded in a time period of two hours and forty-five minutes.
Sergiy as a result of this victory has defeated a top player from Ukraine on the second occasion in three weeks. Earlier at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, he prevented two match points to surpass the American in the opening round clash in three sets.
The final match score was 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-3.
The Ukrainian, who is currently ranked number thirty-five in the World, has improved to a match record of 26-21 on the year as a result of this win. He previously captured the titles in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and New Heaven this season.
Meanwhile, Potito Starace from Italy set up a second round clash with the fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis after getting the better of Teymuraz Gabashvili, a wild card entrant from Russia in three sets. The final match score was 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The clash was stretched to a time period of one hour and forty-seven minutes on Monday. The Italian was broken just once in the first set, however, he improved his game in the last two sets, missing only seven points behind his serve.
Dmitry Tursunov from Russia, on the other hand was hammered down at the hands of his Serbian opponent, Viktor Troicki, in three sets in Moscow. The final score line was 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. The battle was lasted for two hours and the Serbian as a result has improved
to a match record of 30-28 on the year.
The World number forty-three will next take on Jo Wilfried Tsonga, the third seeded French player in the second round of Kremlin Cup.
In other action in Sweden, the fifth seed Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland started his tournament’s campaign with an impressive win over Andreas Seppi of Italy in two sets at the If Stockholm Open Men’s singles competition on Monday. The final match score
was 6-2, 6-2.
The Swiss, who was given a late wild card entry into the main draw was broken at 1-2 in the opening set. He bounced back to take twelve of the next fourteen games and sealed a win in just seventy-nine minutes in the end. Wawrinka, who is currently ranked
number twenty-one in the World is appearing in his second ATP World Tour competition since brushing aside the World number four Andy Murray on his way into the quarter final round in New York.
The right hander has a match record of 32-16 this year. He earlier won the title in Casablanca after getting the better of Hanescu whereas he ended as a finalist in Chennai to Cilic in 2010.
Michael Ryderstedt, who is ranked number 392 in the World, posted his first ATP World Tour-level victory in 2010 as he toppled Daniel Gimeno Tarver of Spain in two sets to make his way into the second round in Sweden. The final match score was 7-6(3), 6-3.
The wild card entrant from Sweden broke serve only once and won eight percent of points behind his first serve to seal victory in eighty-nine minutes.
In the final match on Monday, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland surpassed Michael Berrer in three sets to confirm his place in the second round in Stockholm. The final match score was 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.The clash was stretched to a time period of one hour and fifty-seven
