Toni Elias, 2010 Moto2 World Champion, signed a deal with Aspar team for return to intermediate class in the 2012 season.
The Spanish rider took a rough season run during 2011. He was seen struggling to score better results, but there was no improvement.
Elias said, “I'm really delighted to return to the Aspar Team which is like a family to me because I was there in 2002 and 2003. Many years have passed since then but I'll work with the same technical team, and I know they have great potential. Added to
that is the fact the bike is very strong.”
The Spaniard further shared his views about the Moto2 2012 season. He aims to work hard through the inter-season break and make up for the coming season.
He feels that he will have a strong season in the class, with a new team. He won the 2010 Moto2 champion with Gresini Moriwaki team.
Following the successive season in the intermediate class, he stepped up to premier class with LCR Honda team.
Last time in 2003, Elias raced for Gresini Moriwaki team but could not take the title for the season. He feels that it will be an added motivation to fight again for the title in 2012.
After undergoing an unpleasant MotoGP season, he planned a move to World Superbike Championship for 2012. Finally, he signed a deal for Moto2 championship with Aspar team to regain his title in 2012.
Aspar Team Manager, Jorge Aspar Martinez also expressed his delight to sign the Spanish rider for 2012.
Martinez said, “I'm extremely happy to welcome Toni Elías to the Aspar Team. We still have great memories of his time in the team in 2002 and 2003. With regards to Nico, it's fantastic that he makes the step up to Moto2.”
Martinez expressed that it is a new category for Elias and he has to work hard for the season. The team manager reckoned that he needs to learn and enjoy new things.
He added that he is certain that Elias will do well in the 2012 season because he has been a world champion, irrespective of category. Elias is joined by 125cc Champion, Nico Terol aboard a second Suter machine.
