2010 NBA Drafting: Top 10 picks of the season
This year for some was predictable and for some it was quite the shock, 2010 NBA drafting results came in. Some franchises were left in dismay, some could not be more ecstatic; similar feelings were shared by the drafted players this year. As far as the fans go, they could not have been much happier.
Somehow this year, it all seems to be rotating around King James. Yes I am talking about LeBron James. It has come to the point where he has influenced franchises to keep their salary caps low, keeping LeBron in mind; the King does come expensive.
Getting to the results as expected John Wall was drafted by Washington Wizards; the young hopeful player from University of Kentucky was the #1 pick this year. Next up was Evan turner #2 pick in the drafts, being selected by Philadelphia 76ers was a bit of a shocker as it was thought after 76ers got rid of their giant Samuel Dalembert they could have chosen Derrick Favors from Georgia Tech. However Derrick was picked up by New Jersey Nets, although rumours had it, that New Jersey Nets planned on drafting Wesley Johnson from Kentucky.
Wesley Johnson who was the 4th pick in the drafts this year was selected by Minnesota Timberwolves. Johnson was quite positive about the pick; he said "I was really pleased to learn I was going to Minnesota,"
The much talked about DeMarcus Cousins fell into the lap of Sacramento Kings. But was he happy?, DeMarcus had not much to say; the player thought he will fit in pretty good and hopefully will bring toughness to the team and lead them to win some games.
Falling at # 6 Ekpe Udoh is a versatile player who will be playing for The Golden State Warriors in the following years as a forward & centre. Many questions were raised after his pick, experts say that he is not right pick for the Golden State warriors because of their previous bad picks and loses.
Experts say Udoh might be good at defence but that is not what State Warriors need right now, what they need is a strong forward. Although statically the Golden State Warriors have given up more than 100 points per game, meaning they made the right decision.
This year’s draft really cheered up The Detroit Pistons, as Karen Davidson the owner had her eyes on 7th pick overall, Greg Monroe since the drafting had started. Greg stated:
"Going into the draft, I didn't expect to be anywhere and I couldn't control it, but this season I'm coming in here and just focusing on helping this team win,"
Al-Farouq Aminu was picked up by the Los Angeles Clippers, standing at 8th pick of the season. The 6’9 player is one of the youngest to be drafted this year, although he needs to gain some weight and fix his jump, the promising player seems to be have been very focused during the drafting and showed improvement.
General Manager Neil Olshey seems to be quite delighted with their pick. But the question is, looking back at Clippers, their draft picks over the years haven’t served them well. "We've kind of disguised a lot of twos as threes over the last few years,"
9th pick of the season was Gordon Hayward who was drafted by the Utah Jazz. Gordon standing at 6’8 will play as a forward and most definitely has a bright future ahead of him. Although he is considered slow and desperately needs to put on some weight, his ball handling and ability to make beautiful jump shots and score, overshadows his bad qualities.
Randy Rigby the president of Utah Jazz was fulfilled by his pick. Randy said:
“I am impressed because Gordon Hayward is a winner,”
Hayward articulated his anticipation to begin playing at a professional level by saying:
“I know it’s going to be a journey, adjustment and a challenge, but like I said I’m excited to work hard and play at the next level,”
Finally coming to the 10th pick of the season Paul George, Paul was the last person anyone expected to make it to the top 10 but his performance at the drafting season changed everyone’s mind instantly. The almost 7 feet player is quite versatile for his size and most likely could play as a power forward. The young player was picked by the Indiana Pacers who are quite satisfied with their pick.
Former basketball legend Larry Bird who the president of Indiana Pacers said "It's up to us to get the full potential out of him”……” He's got a lot of skill. He's the type of player that we're targeting now and it's just up to us to get the most out of him.
