He was joined in the quarter run by the second seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga, a second seed player from France who brushed aside Frederico Gil in two sets. The final score line was 6-3, 6-4. The Frenchman closed out the match in seventy
six minutes on Wednesday. He prevented all five break point opportunities he faced and blasted a total of eleven aces to improve his lifetime mark against Gil to 2-0.

during the month of January.

“It is always nice coming back to my home town as it is something you do not have every week of the year and it is a nice feeling,” reflected Melzer after the match on Wednesday.
He further added, “I think I played a good match today. It is always tough to play Lukasz as he is a very talented guy with big shots so you need to be focused, particularly on the big moments. I did that today and I played two
great tie-breaks so I think I deserved to win in two sets.”
