2010 Pilot Pen Tennis: Wozniacki to face Petrova in Final
U.S Open top seed Caroline Wozniacki will face world no. 19 Nadia Petrova in the final match of the 2010 Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament on Saturday. This is Wozniacki’s third consecutive trip to the final of Pilot Pen.
Earlier, Wozniacki defeated Elena Dementieva in the semi final match on Friday, by 1-6, 6-3, and 7-6 (5). Even before this, Dementieva had been to the semifinals four times but unfortunately hadn’t won any of them also while the tournament’s two-time defending Danish champion Caroline is 12-0 in her three trips to New Heaven.
Before making her way to New Haven and after winning last week in Montreal, Caroline had said that she isn’t feeling the pressure of being U.S. Open top seed. "Pressure is when you're put in a spot and you don't really feel like you belong there but when you really believe that you belong there, that you can do the things you have to do, then there's no pressure. You just go out there and play." She had remarked.
Later, while talking to the media about her semifinal win, she said, "I just told myself, 'keep fighting', because Dementieva still has to win four more points so you're still in there."
On the other hand, the Russian Petrova defeated Maria Kirilenko in the other semi final match by 2-6, 6-2, and 6-2. After this match, Kirilenko said that she needed to get her back properly checked before deciding her status for this season’s U.S. Open while Petrova said, “I saw that Kirilenko had a hard moving so my first goal was to keep her run, make her stretch, use my serve as a weapon and try to win as many free shots as possible. Then put pressure on her serve and try to be a little bit more aggressive so that she has to come up with the amazing shot.”
Nadia Petrova had received a last-minute wild-card entry to the tournament after Ana Ivanovic’s withdrawal due to an ankle injury. She had called this chance as a “great gift” and now has got her first final appearance since 2008.
Her attitude towards the play shows that the upcoming final would be really interesting to watch. However, more expectations are for Wozniacki who is famous for playing with tricks. Her terrific speed and movements on the court help to defend most of the balls hit by the opponent. She is also noted for her topspins, her grip over forehand and backhand.
Hopefully, this aggressive and defensive counter-puncher will give the opponent a tough competition by forcing opponent’s errors and running down the ball.
