2010 Rogers Cup: Andy Murray will have to fight hard in order to defend his title
Britain’s number one tennis ace, Andy Murray will have to fight extremely hard in order to defend his 2009 Rogers Cup title, this year in Toronto.
The Scott, who grabbed the Masters 1000 tournament title last year, is likely to face the Belgian tennis player, Xavier Malisse in his opening match of the championship.
Seeded fourth for the competition, Murray received a first round bye and therefore will start his Rogers Cup journey from the second round of the tournament.
The former grass court Grand Slam semi-finalist, Xavier Malisse is, however, the hot favourite to win their clash, as he successfully managed to knock down both Tomas Berdych as well as John Isner in Washington few days ago.
On the other hand, both the top class tennis rivals, Rafael Nadal as well as Roger Federer will also appear in their very first tournament since the grass court Grand Slam event last month at the All England Club. The top ranked Nadal finished off the 2010 Wimbledon as a winner after knocking down Berdych in the final battle.
He will open his tournament either against Stanislas Wawrinka or Frank Dancevic. On the other hand, the Swiss tennis ace, Roger Federer who is seeded number three for this championship will either face Juan Ignacio Chela or Alejandro Falla in his opening clash at the York University.
As far as Murray is concerned, he may have to knock down Rafael Nadal if the Scott is to register his name as the first tennis player from the men’s side in a total of fifteen years to successfully defend his Rogers Cup trophy.
Murray is likely to meet the top ranked Rafa in the semifinal round of the Rogers Cup this year. The Spaniard is set to face American tennis ace Andy Roddick in the quarterfinal round whereas Roger Federer could meet Tomas Berdych.
Murray, in case he wins his opening match of the 2010 Rogers Cup, will face the fifteen seeded French tennis player, Gael Monfils in his next round match whereas Roddick, seeded fifth, is a likely opponent in the quarterfinal round in Toronto.
"With all the top ranked players around, the close clashes will start from the second round of the tournament,” Murray told BBC in an interview a few days ago.
"However, as far as I am concerned, it is always fun contesting in Canada. I have had some nice memories and victories here as junior player as well so I am definitely looking forward to defend my title this year,” he added.
The right-handed Murray has not grabbed a single title so far during this season. His last title victory came in the Valencia Open back in 2009 during the month of November.
In a more recent tournament, Murray made his way into the final of the Farmers Classic Tennis tournament in Los Angeles a few days ago; he was, however, defeated by the American tennis ace Sam Querrey in a total of three sets.
The Belgian tennis player, Malisse, on the other hand, successfully made his way into the semifinal of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic championship in Washington, defeating Tomas Berdych on his way.
The Swiss tennis ace, Roger Federer is also looking for his very first Masters Championship victory this season, and will be hoping to avoid a match with his grass court Grand Slam defeater Tomas Berdych.
The second seeded Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, is likely to face Nikolay Davydenko in the final eight.
The Roger Cup tournament that started from Saturday last week will end on 15th August, 2010.
