2010 Rogers Cup: Vera Zvonareva upsets by defeating Kim Clijsters
The 2010 Rogers Cup witnessed a major upset on Friday when the eighth seed Vera Zvonareva defeated the former world no. 1 Kim Clijsters during the women’s quarter-finals round by 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2. With this victory, Zvonareva made her way into the semi-finals of the tournament being held in Montreal.
The Belgian tennis ace had to take a medical break due to thigh injury after her second set. Afterwards, she returned to the court with a wrapped thigh in order to conclude the third set. Clijsters had earlier won the Rogers Cup opening match while she had also emerged victorious at the Cincinnati Masters 2010.
Clijsters told media after the match that her latest injury would be no distraction for her while defending the U.S Open title this year. She is likely to be back on the practice courts by Wednesday. “It is basically the hip”, said Kim. “I was looking to get an MRI this Sunday, however, the hospitals here are so crowded. Therefore, I am going to get it done by the start of the next week after reaching New Jersey.” She added.
On the other hand, Zvonareva will meet Victoria Azarenka in the semi final match. Victoria had reached the semis after thrashing out Marion Bartoli in a two setter clash. Her final match score was 6-2, 7-6 (6). Zvonareva had in the past lost five times to Clijsters.
Earlier during the 2006 Rogers Cup also, Clijsters had injured her wrist which kept her away from the Courts for 25 months during which she had also given birth to a beautiful daughter named Jada. On her return, Kim successfully captured the 2009 U.S Open title. Nevertheless, the Belgian despite current defeat is most likely to improve her WTA world rankings by one place to stop at the number 3rd. The last time she was ranked that high was back in August 2006.
In yet another action on Friday, Svetlana Kuznetsova also made her way into the semis after defeating the unseed Chinese player Zheng Jie by two sets. Her final match score was 6-1, 6-3. The eleventh seed Svetlana has so far triumphed in all of her six career clashes against Jie. Svetlana, after the match said, “Jie’s game has improved and now it’s not that easy to beat her as it was earlier”.
