2010 Ryder Cup: Lee Westwood finally recovers but now Peter Hanson is sick
Colin Montgomerie has announced that all of his twelve players will play on the first day of the 2010 Ryder Cup. He said this in response to the queries regarding Lee Westwood's fitness.
Lee Westwood has been suffering from a broken calf muscle injury since one month. But, according to the media reports and the player himself, he has been improving on a faster rate. At the Celebrity Invitational last week, Westy performed
marvelously. Although, it looked as if a baby was just starting to take his first steps, still he went in the thirty-six holes without any sign of pain or inconvenience. “This is great news”, said the vice-captain, Darren Clarke at the venue while talking
to the media.
The purpose of attending the Celebrity Invitational was to deliver the message of Westy’s fitness to his team and the captain, who was pretty much concerned over the issue. Monty seemed quite nervous while addressing the media. He said that
earlier he had called a meeting with his vice–captains in which the pairing of the players was decided. Later, the team was informed regarding their pairs and tee timings so that they can prepare themselves in time.
Many issues had risen last time in Valhalla, where the 2008 Ryder Cup took place. Rory McIlory had a terrible time being paired up with Graeme Mc Dowell but this time around, careful analysis has been done beforehand to make sure that the
partnerships expected from the players are really achievable.
Experts believe that right decision at the right time is the key to success in the four balls. Both the partnering players should know whom they are playing with and how they should act so that their game becomes a catalyst for success. Besides, Monty knows
the strengths and weaknesses of his players. Therefore, he surely would have taken the correct decision.
Moreover, Monty isn’t ready to tolerate any negligence when it comes to health matters. He said, “Barring accidents, illness mishaps or whatever; all 12 players will play the first day”. This means that he won’t allow any of his players to be careless especially
with only one week left for the four balls to begin. Four balls is a session held on the first day of the Ryder Cup for the pro-am. It is merely a fitness check but if a player fails in it, he is forced out of contention.
Colin Montgomerie was worried on this so he discussed the issue with Clarke, Paul McGinley, Thomas Bjorn and Sergio Garcia. All agreed with his concerns but they also informed him that the players were fit enough to give Americans a good challenge at the
Celtic Manor. After listening to the reports presented to him by the vice-captains, Colin said that he was delighted by the fact that the top ranked player went through the trial of 36 holes in a day and did it fine. Colin was referring to Lee West wood.
However, a new headache for the captain seems to be Peter Hanson, who is sick due to chest infection. The winner of the Czech Open has also been experiencing nausea, headache and cold. After checkup, he was informed that he had caught a bacterial infection
through food; therefore, he had to take rest. Earlier, Peter Hanson withdrew from the 2010 Vivendi Cup, which started today at the Golf de Joyenval.
This is it for now, although, a lot is coming in due time but till then the golf-lovers will have to wait. Moreover, keep your fingers crossed for the sick player.
