2010 Ryder Cup Teams Update: Monty busy practicing his opening speech – Corey Pavin’s squad reaches
Cardiff
Colin Montgomerie seems pretty optimistic about the 2010 Ryder Cup. But still, he has written somewhat of a losing captain's speech that he might use on the 3rd October 2010 at Celtic Manor.
The captain of the European side has high hopes for his team as he appears to have the best golfers of the world along with a remarkable record of eight victories in 37 editions of the Ryder cup, which include five in this decade. At present,
Montgomerie has his focus on the address that he has penned for the event’s upcoming opening ceremony. He believes that a strong opening speech will boost the morale of his team.
At the same time, Monty has also penned down somewhat of a losing captain’s speech for the bad times. He owes this to the strong position of the American side, who are also the defending champions. Monty still remembers the time in 2008
when he was part of the European team that lost to the Americans, who were then headed by Paul Azinger. Colin has spent more than 18 months in planning this Ryder Cup and thinking about the last eight events in which he had the privilege of representing his
continent. He has jotted all those moments down on a paper.
Two years back, Nick Faldo, who was then captain of the European side, was severely criticized for delivering an insensible opening speech. In that speech, Faldo had aimlessly talked about his family while also giving Soren Hansen, who was then a rookie,
a wrong name. He called him Soren Stenson and mocked Graeme McDowell for not knowing his origin. To make it worse, he had even said that Padraig Harrington had hit more practice shots than there were potatoes in Ireland. Monty assures that nothing of that
sort will happen this time as he has been practicing hard to make it right. He has come to realize the consequences of a good motivational speech and also a lame one.
Media reports added that when Faldo made the fluke in Valhalla, the opposite team captain left while on the next day, European side lost by 6½ to 1½. It was as bad as over. On the contrary, when Sam Torrance addressed his team at the Belfry in 2002, Europeans
had won by 15½ to 12½.
While discussing the loser’s speech, Montgomerie said that although he had prepared one for the bad times but still he has faith in his team and wishes that he won’t have to use it. He further added that it would be a close combat between the two teams and
captain’s guidance will play an essential part on both sides.
This was Monty’s verdict on the 2010 Ryder Cup Opening speech. Now, some news about the opposite side also. The American team has reached Cardiff on their chartered flight straight from Atlanta, where the 2010 Tour Championship recently ended. It includes
players such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Jeff Overton and Bubba Watson.
There is one thing that might prove to be a headache for Corey Pavin later at Celtic Manor. American side has five rookies who lack experience and it is possible that they might out run the Europeans but if they don’t then good luck to the captain who has
chosen them.
This is all for the news regarding both the teams who are getting ready for Celtic Manor to give each other an experience of a life time.
